Former British chancellor Rishi Sunak, who is of Indian descent and is running for the leadership of the Conservative Party in order to succeed Liz Truss as Prime Minister and improve the economy, formally announced his intention to run for the position on Sunday.
Even though supporters of his former boss, Boris Johnson, have claimed that he has the necessary 100 MPs needed to make it to the shortlist, the 42-year-old candidate is the clear frontrunner as he raced ahead with the backing of at least 128 Tory members of Parliament. The shortlist consists of the top three candidates.
Even though the former Conservative leader and the prime minister have not yet made his official candidacy known, the race is shaping up to be a three-way fight between Sunak, Johnson, and Penny Mordaunt, who is now in third place in the race for the position of Leader of the Commons.
