American radio host, Russell Dale Martin was born on October 4, 1960, and died on February 27, 2021. He was based in Dallas. He spent 31 of those years serving the Dallas radio market. Before KLLI Live 105.3 in Dallas went all-sports on December 8, 2008, Martin was the host of the top-rated show, The Russ Martin Show. Martin’s afternoon show on 97.1 “The Eagle” aired again on July 12, 2010, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. (KEGL).
Martin attended W.W. Samuell High School and was up in the big working-class community of Pleasant Grove in southeast Dallas. In the 1980s, Martin started his career in radio by working as a board operator for religious programmes at KGVL 1400 AM in Greenville, Texas from 6:00 p.m. to midnight.
Martin began his career as a country music DJ in 1982 when he was employed by KTLR 107.1 FM in Terrell, Texas. The next year, in 1984, he was employed as a weekend DJ for KAAM 1310 AM in Dallas. While still working at KAAM and KAFM, Martin began working part-time for Z-Rock in addition to his 1986 part-time job with the Satellite Music Network’s oldies format.

Russ Martin’s Career
The Howard Stern Show’s departure from KEGL prompted the debut of the first version of The Russ Martin Show. He started working there in 1997 when he was asked to cover the morning drive time position. Martin’s popularity in Dallas surpassed that of longtime radio host Ron Chapman in just two years.
After an argument over a contract, Martin quit KEGL in the year 2000. Previously playing only country and western music, KYNG has recently welcomed back The Russ Martin Show. On April 6, 2000, Martin began hosting his show on KYNG, once again during the morning drive time period.
After KYNG signed Howard Stern, The Russ Martin Show switched time slots from morning drives to afternoons (3:00-7:00). It was in 2003 that KYNG became KLLI under the Live 105.3 moniker.
Since his show’s debut on 105.3, KLLI has enjoyed consistently good ratings for The Russ Martin Show. D Magazine voted Martin the top DFW radio talk show host in August 2005. As part of a format shift in December 2008 to feature more live sports programming, Martin was let go when Live 105.3’s radio station changed its sound. Then, one of his former employees publicly criticised him.
For 25 years, J.D. Ryan served as Martin’s radio right-hand man. “Stuff he’d say to us on the air he wouldn’t say to us in the hall, because he’s a coward,” Ryan says. “Everything seemed like a bit to him, but he went too far. It got under my skin. He stressed that achieving accomplishment was insufficient. If he was going to be happy, everyone around him had to be a complete and utter failure, too.”
Promos for The Russ Martin Show’s return aired on KEGL on July 1, 2010. On July 12, 2010, the show premiered in its regular time slot of 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. The Russ Martin Show’s greatest episodes have been running on KEGL throughout the daytime slot since September 14, 2011.
On September 22, 2011, Chris Ryan, who was then the programme director at KEGL, stated that beginning on September 26, 2011, the Russ Martin Show would air from 3:00 to 7:00 in the afternoon. Previous afternoon episodes of the show have been rebroadcast on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on KFXR-AM, KEGL’s sister station, since November 17, 2014.
In 2016, Russ experienced a series of health problems that caused him to miss multiple performances throughout the year. After Russ left, the show’s ratings actually went up since Dan, Clo, and Alfie were able to carry it on their own with some assistance from Scott West.
Aside from Russ Martin, the cast also features Dan O’Malley, Clo Raborn, Alfie Coy, and Jerry Caldwell. Dr Scott Thornton, Everett Newton, Captain Mark Howard, Mark Verma, Scott West, and Ty Jäger are just a few of the show’s frequent visitors.
As part of widespread budget cuts at iHeartRadio, the show’s hosts Jerry Caldwell and Ty Jäger were let go on January 15, 2020. Fire and Mercy, by William Orbit, is the album theme song for The Russ Martin Show. It was released in 1987 on the Strange Cargo album.
