Statistically speaking, Velma is a lesbian. Clips from the new movie “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” have gone viral on Twitter because they prove long-held assumptions about the Mystery Inc. member’s reaction to meeting costume designer Coco Diablo.
One tweet with over a hundred thousand likes reads: “OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY.” Fans and “Scooby-Doo” creators have known for a long time that Velma is gay. Despite James Gunn, the writer of the original live-action movie, and Tony Cervone, the supervising producer of the “Mystery Incorporated” series, both confirming the character’s sexuality, they were never able to make it official on screen.

In the Wake of ‘Don’t Say, Gay,’ a Depleted Disney Aims to Mitigate Fallout Gunn “tried” to make Velma a lesbian in the live-action movies, he tweeted in 2020. “In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” he wrote. But the studio kept diluting it, making it vague (in the version that was shot), then nothing (in the version that was published), and ultimately having a boyfriend (in the sequel).
On Instagram during Pride Month in 2020, Cervone said, “I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. Yes, she’s a lesbian. We expected Velma to act strangely and out of character while dating Shaggy since she was in the wrong relationship and was having trouble understanding why.
It’s not entirely evident, but if you follow the entire Marcie arc, it’s as plain as we could make it 10 years ago, and there are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid. After the timeline reset, I believe that Marcie and Velma are now dating, despite their strong affection for one another throughout the original timeframe.
