Self-admitted Latin Kings Gang Member Beat Stepfather Requested $300k Bond in Mundelein

A self-admitted Latin Kings gang member was accused after prosecutors claim he beat up his stepfather in Mundelein and demanded money from him, resulting in several wounds. Two counts of domestic abuse, one count of obstructing the reporting of domestic violence, and one case of mob action were brought against Carlos Velasquez, 21, of Mundelein.

In the case, the victim is Velasquez’s stepfather, and the two of them cohabit, according to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Francis DeRosa. On November 13, Velasquez and two other males allegedly confronted the victim at their Mundelein home and demanded payment for something they said he owed.

According to DeRosa, the deceased was likely used as a scapegoat for money Velasquez owed to his buddies even though he had no debt to his stepson. The males allegedly refused to leave the house after the victim asked them to. The co-defendant allegedly threatened the witness when they attempted to phone 911 when the victim begged them to.

According to DeRosa, the defendant and co-defendant beat the victim outside after he consented to leave the premises. Before the police arrived, Velasquez and the co-defendant had already departed the area. According to DeRosa, officers noticed a bruised eye, edoema, and blood on the victim’s head and face in addition to other wounds. Later, Velasquez was detained and charged.

Velasquez, according to Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak, is a member of the Latin Kings gang who “self-admitted” it. Velasquez’s bond was set by Potkonjak at $300,000. To be released, he would have to post $30,000, or 10%. The Lake County Jail is where Velasquez is still detained. The 29th of November is the day of the status hearing.
