Shaggy, a Jamaican-American musician best known by his stage name Richard Burrell, had hits with the songs “Boombastic,” “It Wasn’t Me,” and “Angel.”
On October 22, 1968, Shaggy was born in Kingston, Jamaica. His parents, Lorraine and Clinton, moved the family to Brooklyn, New York City when he was seven.
Shaggy started taking voice lessons when he was a student at Erasmus Hall High in 1987. He was found singing with his companions on the streets of New York City the following year.
The Jamaican-American reggae artist enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps that same year, and his Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) was Field Artillery Cannon Crewman, or 0811.
When the 5th Battalion and 10th Marines deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1991 to liberate Kuwait, Shaggy volunteered as an artilleryman and spent most of his time with them.
He spent some time in the military, rising to the rank of Lance Corporal, but twice had that title taken away from him. His “biggest concern was going AWOL,” the “In The Summertime” hitmaker claimed in an interview with the Military Times in 2011.
“Every weekend, I would drive up to New York to produce music. I sometimes returned too late. And because I have a big mouth, I mouthed off quite a bit. You’ll be caught doing things like that, ” he added.
