Although a release date for Skate 4 has not been announced, we are beginning to get a lot better idea of what EA’s highly anticipated skating simulator will look like. When it finally does come out, for instance, we know that it will be free-to-play and that it will offer cross-platform play with cross-progression. Despite being the fourth film in the long-running Skate series, we now know that it is not a sequel to any of the others and is just titled Skate.
Just recently, we were shown a brief clip of gameplay and given information on how to join up for playtests before the game’s official release. Find out more about those, along with everything else about Skate 4 (or Skate) that we know (or didn’t know) so far.

Release Date of Skate 4
When do you think you’ll see Skate 4 released? We feel like we’ve been waiting forever, but we’re probably not going to have to. While Electronic Arts has not yet announced when Skate 4 will be released, publisher CEO Andrew Wilson said in the company’s Q3 2022 earnings call that the skateboarding game will “launch shortly.”
It’s not a perfect answer, but it’s something better than silence. According to EA’s 2020 announcement, development on Skate 4 has just begun. Two years later, it seems like production is moving along smoothly. An anonymous source said in March 2022 that “playtesting has been going on for months” (opens in new tab). Then, only a few weeks later, pre-alpha footage of Skate 4 surfaced online(opens in new tab), but the most recent information we have comes from the developers themselves.
The developers reaffirmed their it’s ready when it’s ready position in the middle of July 2022, when they revealed that Skate 4 would not be a direct sequel to its predecessors (thus the game’s name, Skate) and will be free to play.
Play Skate 4 without spending a dime
Skate 4 will, in fact, be a freemium game. During a developer stream in the middle of July 2022, it was stated that Skate 4 — or Skate, as it is more often known — would not have a premium price tag and would not be pay-to-win. The developers have confirmed that the upcoming Skate game will not feature loot boxes or “paid gameplay bonuses,” as well as that “no map portions hidden behind a paywall” will be there. They also used Apex Legends as an example of a successful free-to-play game, emphasising that Skate 4 is made for people of all financial backgrounds.
Put on your skates for some multidirectional action and development
The developers revealed Skate 4 will be free-to-play when it launches, and they also announced that the game will support cross-platform play and cross-progression in the same stream. This implies that gamers on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One can team up if they so desire, and that players on IOS and Android can look forward to the same features when Skate 4 is released on mobile.
Preview of Skate 4
Most recently, EA released some “pre-pre-pre-alpha” footage of Skate 4 (EA’s words, not ours). Some of the gameplay mechanics and techniques are demonstrated in the film, although the character models and locations are obviously still in development.
As our very own Joe Donnelly puts it, “Skate 4 is exploiting its own anticipation to entice aficionados and novices alike.” The video’s aesthetics may surprise you. The film deftly feeds into the excitement by showing us only a little snippet of pre-alpha footage, leaving viewers hungry for more. It is expected that the looks and gameplay of Skate 4 will undergo significant change as development continues, as the game will be fashioned by player feedback.
Try out the skates for the demo
There is a playtest for Skate 4, and you may sign up for it if you want to try to get in. Here’s what to expect, as detailed on the official EA page(opens in new tab): You can help shape Skate by providing input at every stage of development, according to the blurb you see when you join up. The development of Skate necessitates a progressive scaling of player access, so we can’t say when you’ll be able to play.
Platform skating on four wheels
Skate 4 is coming to PC, as announced by Electronic Arts. The publisher has not yet made any announcements on platform releases, but this will be the first game in the series to hit PC.Given that the current generation of consoles has been out for a while, it’s probably reasonable to assume that Skate 4 will likewise debut on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
Despite our enthusiastic anticipation, EA has been erratic in its communication on the release of Skate 4 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Despite the continued availability of titles such as FIFA and Madden NFL for previous-generation consoles, new games such as Star Wars: Jedi Survivor have been released exclusively for next-gen consoles.
Gameplay of Skate 4
You could really put your personal stamp on your skating in the Skate games. With the innovative FlickitT dual analogue control system allowing you to create your own skill-based tricks and string them together to create unique lines, the animations and physics were set up in such a way that you felt like you had complete control over how your skater moved and presented themselves in the parks.
Everything we know about EA’s plans for Skate 4 gameplay suggests that it will try to modernise the award-winning formula for a new generation of gamers. In addition, the publisher has indicated that it would be investing in “user created content, exploration, and community” for Skate 4, recognising the importance of the community in ensuring the longevity of the Skate franchise.
