Here we are talking about Spencer Dutton Death. Spencer Dutton was fully introduced to us in 1923, and his tale may be the most brutal in the entire Yellowstone history.
You’re not insane if you can’t recall a Spencer Dutton before 1923. We’ve only briefly met this character in Yellowstone Season 4 flashbacks to a period after 1883. Within, we discovered that James and Margaret Dutton had a son named Spencer following their first son, John, in 1883.
We don’t get to know the adult version of this Dutton brother until the first episode of 1923. Spencer, portrayed by a steely, seductive Brandon Sklenar, has developed into a giant game hunter who prefers the fantastic beasts of Africa as prey.
Violent flashbacks partially explain why he, too, chose this life. His tragic World War I service still haunts him, and like so many other soldiers, Spencer has opted to forge his path rather than try to live everyday life.
In the first episode of 1923, Spencer is hired to hunt down a large leopard that has developed a hunger for human flesh. So the game begins after he uses himself and his countrymen as the bait.
Or it would be if he didn’t first have supper with the guests he’s guarding. Thus, a hunted-out Spencer joins English customers for dinner. And as he does so, he turns to face the people he is saving from being eaten by “a leopard the size of a sofa.”

We meet a young woman over dinner who, to put it mildly, instantly clicks with Spencer. However, unlike Spencer, she isn’t even mentioned in the show. However, Catherine, who Alexandra Grossi portrays, is taking everything Spencer says. Ironically, this determines her fate.
1923: Spencer Dutton Death Caused By Leopard
Under his appearance in the pilot, it becomes clear that Spencer is a Dutton living on his own, much like Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) did before deciding to support her father once Yellowstone began. And right now, he’s waiting for a considerable leopard far away from his Montana relatives.
Spencer sets himself and his hunting companions up as the human bait in the dark of night. But as patron Catherine leaves her tent wearing a silk nightgown, it appears Spencer is on her mind. She must first stop for a midnight urinate in a bush, which is the final thing she would ever do.
A giant leopard emerges from the dark grass, its fangs clenching around her jugular. The hunters listen as they hear the sharp, wet slaps of breaking flesh and bone. Spencer runs after the leopard, catching sight of it as it drags Catherine’s body into a tree and kills her in a horrifying scene.
But as it does, his comrades notice another leopard’s shape on their tent. The moment Spencer fires, the beast is struck, and Catherine’s bleeding body flops to the ground. They are not, however, alone.
“Spencer! His companions exclaim, “There are two!” and another leopard emerges from the underbrush, bringing the 1923 premiere to a terrifying conclusion. Next Sunday, December 25, 1923, will make its comeback with Episode 2, only on Paramount Plus.
Did Spencer Dutton Died in 1923?
It’s doubtful that 1923 would cut off such a significant character so early in the series, even though it’s extensively indicated that the jaguar kills Spencer.
One of the actors seen in the opening sequence of the prequel series is Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer in 1923. Additionally, IMDB lists Spencer Dutton as having appeared in all eight of the first season of 1923 episodes.
Spencer’s appearances in the pilot won’t be his last in the series, according to the 1923 trailer. Could Spencer pass away in 1923 at any point? Yes, it’s plausible; nobody knows what happened to the Duttons in 1923, and as long-time Yellowstone viewers are aware, death in the Sheridan universe can occur anytime.
This holds for all of the primary characters in the Yellowstone prologue, not just Spencer. Spencer might not succumb to the jaguar in the 1923 pilot so quickly, but the former soldier-turned-hunter could leave with yet another striking scar and a reminder of his frailty.
Spencer’s “Death” In The 1923 Pilot Pays Tribute To Yellowstone
The unexpected passing of Lee Dutton, John Dutton‘s youngest son, during the Yellowstone pilot is only the latest in a string of bad omens. Elsa Dutton’s final moments in the 1883 ending resembled Lee’s death.
Spencer’s “death” feels authentic due to this pattern of Dutton deaths throughout important episodes of programs in the Sheridanverse, besides paying homage to the Yellowstone pilot.
However, given that Spencer Dutton from 1923 has a good chance of surviving his encounter with a jaguar, it’s possible that the significant catastrophe will occur towards the conclusion or apex of the first season of 1923.
The 1923 pilot’s chilling opening narration by Elsa Dutton states, “Violence has always haunted this family.” The Duttons’ happily ever after in 1923 seems doubtful in what is turning out to be the darkest Yellowstone tale yet.
