The sage Savran passed away at age 76. His final social media message, published in April, revealed that he had been battling lung cancer and had recently had an amputation of his right foot.
The native Clevelander relocated to Pittsburgh in 1976 when the team was on the verge of its first of six Super Bowl victories. After starting his career at the defunct KQV, he moved to WWSW-AM. After ten years at WTAE-AM, he moved to WTAE-TV, where he hosted a chat show.
Savran, however, was widely recognized as the co-host, alongside Guy Junker, of the popular television show “SportsBeat” from 1991 to 2009. The line “Stan, Guy, love the show” was commonly used by callers to the front and has stuck around long after the program has stopped.

For WPGH-TV, Savran covered sports as well. For many years, he penned a weekly sports column for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and hosted intermission parts during AT&T Sportsnet Pittsburgh’s coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
He most recently presided over a weekday 970 ESPN discussion show. After news of Savran’s death was released on Monday evening, tributes poured in across all social media platforms.
He was “Not just a Pittsburgh media icon but a Pittsburgh icon, period,” as proclaimed by Mark Madden, presenter of a daily sports talk program on 105.9 The X. A reliable companion, genuine peer, and good human being. It’s a privilege to have worked beside and gotten to know him.
