Developed by Gene Roddenberry, ‘Star Trek’ is an American science fiction television series that chronicles the exploits of the crew of the spaceship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) is a retronym for the original series of the Star Trek media franchise. The series ran from September 1966 to December 1967 and was produced by Norway Productions and Desilu Productions. This series aired on Paramount Television from January 1968 until June 1969. From September 8, 1966, until June 3, 1969, Star Trek was shown on NBC. On September 6, 1966, it premiered on CTV in Canada.
After three seasons and 79 episodes, NBC canceled Star Trek due to low Nielsen ratings. Years later, the show was a smashing success in syndication, and it stayed that way into the 1970s, becoming an instant classic and having an outsized impact on pop culture. Star Trek is widely regarded as one of the most popular and influential television series. It eventually created a franchise that included 11 television series, 13 feature films, and numerous books, games, and toys.
Star Trek Season 5 Storyline
Cleveland “Book” Booker (David Ajala) travels back to his home planet of Kwejian for his nephew’s coming-of-age ritual after welcoming a highly dubious race back into the Federation with Burnham. He manages to get off the world in the nick of time. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Discovery’s resident scientific genius, concludes that a hitherto unseen gravitational distortion spreading over the sector was responsible for the destruction of Kwejian. Saru (Doug Jones), the ship’s former captain, returns aboard Discovery as Burnham’s first officer so that he may look into whatever is going on.
After the Federation narrowly escapes disaster when the Dark Matter Anomaly (or DMA, for the show’s writers’ convenience) abruptly alters direction, the Discovery crew does all it can to keep the still-weak organization together. Based on the DMA’s mysterious disappearance and subsequent reappearance some a thousand light-years away, the Federation concludes that only a significantly evolved intelligent species could have devised and managed such a device. Discovery discovers that wherever the DMA moves, it leaves a toxic emptiness floating through space behind it after researching a subspace rupture left in its path.
Book, a compassionate empath, has difficulty managing his feelings of wrath and loss. Book meets his match in the rogue Risan scientist Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle), who has joined Discovery to investigate the DMA. Tarka builds a model of its energy source to determine how to stop the DMA. In the meantime, Zora, the intelligent computer aboard the Discovery (a system that emerged from the “spherical data,” information the crew recovered from an ancient, advanced creature and moved forward in time to keep out of the wrong hands), deduces the likely origin of the DMA. The crew’s safety is more important to her than disclosing any details on Species 10-C. Thus, she refuses to do so.
The book can express his sadness to the rest of 10C thanks to his empathic (almost telepathic?) abilities. He persuades them to turn off the DMA and reestablish contact with the cosmos. The ship and its crew may safely return to their home galaxy when he does. In a humorous appearance, future U.S. president and Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams welcomes Discovery to United Earth and announces that Earth will rejoin the Federation. As punishment for his actions, Book will leave Burnham and work with the communities negatively impacted by the DMA.
As with Season 3, the Season 4 conclusion of Star Trek: Discovery concludes a complete and rewarding story arc. Discovery has, so far, been able to forego the traditional season-ending cliffhanger without suffering a significant drop in ratings. Given the highly serialized nature of streaming storylines, it will be fascinating to watch if this trend continues into Season 5.
