Station 19 Season 6 Storyline
Shonda Rhimes appears to be on the verge of a new hit show. Replace medicine with fire in Grey’s Anatomy. The drama and sexual tension will remain, but the pretty doctors will be replaced by pretty firefighters. Station 19 it is.
Andy Herrera is the drama’s “Meredith Grey” (Jaina Lee Ortiz). It’s all done with voice-overs from her point of view in Station 19. Andy is tough, strong, and descended from a legendary family. Even though Andy wants to be treated like any other person, the captain (Miguel Sandoval) adores her and sings her praises. This sounds familiar?
Lieutenant Jack Gibson is also her boyfriend (Grey Damon). Firefighters work where the hoses are instead of in on-call rooms or medical supply closets. (It’s not a slur.) A room full of hoses exists.) Andy is astonished to find an engagement ring in his pocket while having sex with Jack. Jack instantly goes on the defense, pleading with Andy not to fall into a frenzy. The alarm goes off before she has a chance to respond. This season, I predict that the ringing of the bell will interrupt many conversations. It’s a huge time saver.
A police car is obstructing Andy’s red zone, so she uses the truck to push it out of the way before beating the officer. This is a fun fact: Andy’s childhood neighbor, Ryan (Alberto Frezza), is the cop who escorted her to her high school prom. There’s something fishy going on here… Is Seattle’s police department on the horizon?
Rushing into the building, everyone tries to find those who have been left behind. It’s clear that Jack and the captain are working together as a team in this situation. When Jack returns to the bridge, the smoke is so thick that he can’t see anything, including the captain. He has lost his almost-father-in-law/almost-boss, Jack, the almost-fiancé. I can think of no better illustration of a bad day.
It’s up to Maya (Danielle Savre) to help Jack track down the captain as Maya and Andy hurry to save the day. Because he’s unconscious and the blaze is too large, we’re powerless to help. What’s the answer? As a matter of course. Fortunately, the others have inflated inflatable pillow-like structures to cushion the crash. While Jack, Andy, and Maya gulp O2 like it’s their duty, the captain is carried away to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Station 19 firefighters refer to oxygen as “O2,” which I feel the need to point out. Using two syllables instead of three is easier. Plus, it’s a lot more appealing.
When Andy learns that her father and mother are still alive, she hyperventilates on the scene. Fortunately, Ryan is there to assist her. Warren (Jason George), the Grey’s Anatomy’s Bailey’s husband, goes all “I used to be a surgeon” and nearly kills the captain by administering blood thinners to him in the ambulance.
Everyone arrives at Grey Sloan, and Dr. Bailey whisks away the captain in a private meeting. For abandoning her father in the middle of an inferno, Andy lashes out at Jack. Man, that’s just plain rude. Insinuating that Andy is enraged with him since he proposed, Jack picks this exact moment to make his accusation.
