Suspect Apprehended In Waukegan Shooting; Two Young Adults Injured
An arrest has been made concerning a gunman who is suspected of opening fire during a shooting incident outside a Waukegan apartment complex last month that injured two young adults.
On March 30, at approximately 9:50 p.m., the Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded to a shooting incident at the Lakeside Tower Apartments, 200 Julian Street.
Two victims were shot at the apartment complex, according to 911 dispatchers, while a third victim was located in the 400 block of North Genesee Street across the street.
Upon arrival, officers discovered two shooting victims, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain. The third victim could not be found. A 22-year-old female victim had gunshot wounds to her stomach and right arm.
According to Chastain, she was taken by EMS to a nearby hospital and underwent surgery there. Later on, her condition stabilized.
An 18-year-old man was shot in the leg, making him the second victim. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted and declared stable. According to Chastain, the two victims were shot as they were outside of the apartment building.
According to Chastain, when the firing started, the man might have been on foot and the woman might have been in a car. They aren’t thought to have been together when the incident happened.
After being hit by gunfire and towed from the scene, a pickup truck that was parked outside Lakeside Tower was removed.
Additionally, the apartment building’s front was hit by gunfire, which broke the front lobby’s glass windows. The front of the building, including the parking garage door, was taped off with crime scene tape.
Fewer than two weeks after the shooting, on April 11, detectives got a warrant for Nazir Plaines, 18, to be arrested, according to court records.
Prosecutors claim that when Plaines was following two unidentified people, he pulled out a gun and started shooting at the occupied pickup truck, hitting the victim’s stomach. The male victim was not claimed to have been shot by Plaines in the warrant, and it’s unclear if authorities are still seeking additional suspects.
According to the prosecution, Plaines has a history of multiple prior criminal convictions, including one for aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, and was found guilty of felonies in a juvenile case from 2023. Plaines, who is still being held at the Lake County Jail, is expected to show up on Tuesday for a detention hearing.
