The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards were held at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. Awards were given for things like video of the year, song of the year, and best new artist.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Anitta, Bad Bunny, Blackpink, Eminem and Snoop Dogg, J Balvin, Jack Harlow, Kane Brown, Lizzo, Maneskin, Marshmello and Khalid, Nicki Minaj, Panic! at the Disco, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers were among the performers this year. Minaj and Chili Peppers also won awards for best hip-hop and best rock, respectively. A lot of other artists also won awards, including Kane Brown, who made history by being the first male country artist to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Madonna, who has won the most VMAs with 20 wins, Beyonce, Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, Adele, and others were all up for awards in different categories.
Taylor Swift won the Video of the Year award, making her the first artist to win for a video they directed and the only one to ever win three VMAs for video of the year.
The Hollywood Reporter said that during her speech at the 2022 VMAs, Swift said that her new album will come out in October and that more information would be released at midnight that same night.
The best collaboration award went to Lil Nas X and Harlow for their song “Industry Baby.” Harry Styles’s album “Harry’s House” won album of the year, and Lisa beat out BTS to win the VMA for best K-pop, even though BTS won group of the year. Here are all of the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards winners.
Taylor Swift Is First Artist to Achieve This VMAs Feat
Taylor Swift was the top winner at the 2022 Video Music Awards, with three honors — video of the year, best long-form video, and best direction, all for “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version).” The 2017 Video Music Awards took place on Sunday, August 26, at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey (Aug. 28).
Swift is the first artist to win video of the year three times. She has two Grammys under her belt, for 2015’s “You Need to Calm Down” and 2015’s “Bad Blood,” which featured Kendrick Lamar (2019). This is reminiscent of Swift’s groundbreaking feat of becoming the first female artist to win album of the year three times at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Here, however, Swift is the first performer of any gender to accomplish this.
With these three wins, Swift’s total number of Video Music Awards moves to 14, putting her in fourth place all-time, behind Beyoncé (29), Madonna (20), and Lady Gaga (8). (18). Yep, female solo musicians are the top four winners of all time. Jack Harlow received four total prizes, however, that includes two technical categories. Lil Nas X and Harry Styles each earned three prizes. Among the winners were Nicki Minaj, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Lisa of BLACKPINK.
Some of the winners were genuine shockers, like Lisa taking best K-pop and Anitta taking best Latin. Anchoring the show were LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj, and Winnie Harlow. Minaj got the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Red Hot Chili Peppers got the Global Icon Award. Both of these painters also received competitive accolades.
VMAs 2022 Winners
Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny‘s win as an artist of the year was a first for the genre. This marks the first time a Latin musician has won a major award at the Video Music Awards, regardless of genre. His victory came as a surprise, but it was not shocking, considering the competition he faced. This week, Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti spends a ninth week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, tying the Encanto soundtrack for the longest run ever at the top spot.
Harry Styles
The affable superstar’s song “As It Was” took up the award for best pop. When Style was a member of One Direction, the group’s “What Makes You Beautiful” video was named the greatest in the genre of pop music. Styles is only the second performer to achieve this feat (after the band Fun.).
The pioneer was Justin Timberlake of *NSYNC. “Bye Bye Bye” (2000) and “Pop” (2002) were the winners (2001). In 2003, JT took home the trophy for his song “Cry Me a River.” The album Styles by Harry’s House is the first to win album of the year. His opposition included the debut albums that he is very expected to face again in the Grammy competition for album of the year – Adele’s 30 and Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti.
Jack Harlow
Three of Harlow’s four trophies were shared with Lil Nas X. Best Collaboration was awarded to the duo for their work on the Hot 100 number one single “Industry Baby.” This is the first time since the category’s inception in 2007 that a male-only team has taken home the trophy. The art direction and visual effects of “Industry Baby” were also recognized with awards. As a bonus, Harlow’s “First Class,” which peaked at No. 1 on the Hot 100, was named the summer’s best song.
Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj won the Video Vanguard Award and the Best Hip Hop award for “Do We Have a Problem?” (which included Lil Baby). With her fourth win in the category, Minaj has surpassed Drake as the most successful hip-hop artist of all time. Minaj’s “Super Bass” (2011), “Anaconda” (2015), and “Chun-Li” (2017) were all nominated for and won the award in their respective years (2018).
Minaj now has seven Video Music Awards to Missy Elliott’s six, making her the all-time leader among female rappers in that category. Before Minaj, Elliott was the most recent victor of Video Vanguard. In 2019, she was given the award.
BLACKPINK And Lisa
Lisa of BLACKPINK took up the prize for best K-pop for her debut solo single “Lalisa.” She triumphed over BTS, who had won the previous three years running with the singles “Boy With Luv” (with Halsey), “On,” and “Butter.” As of their performance of “The Virtual,” BLACKPINK has been crowned the winner of the award for finest metaverse performance. This year, a new award category was created to recognize and celebrate online performances.
This is the second VMA win for the all-female South Korean band. Two years earlier, “How You Like That” received the award for the best summer song. MTV partnered with Recur to create the first-of-its-kind NFT eco-friendly minted companion award and presented it to the winner in this category.
