Tech Diver Jared Hires Dies At Plura Cave
General manager of Dive Rite, a diving equipment firm located in Lake City, Jared Hires, passed away tragically on a dive in Norway on Wednesday.
Hires’ age was thirty-three. Along with his wife Taylor and two kids, he is survived by his parents, Lamar and LeeAnn. Taylor Hires told X-Ray Mag, “He loved this sport, the people, the industry — he was so proud to be a part of it.”
Hires and eight other people were reportedly diving at Plura Cave on Wednesday, according to the Norwegian news agency NRK. While diving in a group of three, Hires experienced a seizure while underwater and was brought back to the surface.
After his fellow divers brought Hires out, paramedics attempted to revive him for an hour but were unable.
According to Police Chief Alf Ulrike Stenberg Rokstad, “I must commend fellow divers and other personnel on-site for their efforts,” NRK said. “His life was unfortunately not saved.”
Hires’ group stopped in a chamber to inspect their equipment during the dive. When it was discovered that Hires was unconscious, they decided it was okay and started back up.
According to NRK, the Plura Valley team was on the site in three minutes with a defibrillator to assist with first aid. According to the Norwegian police, the group was in the cave 20–30 meters below the surface when the event happened.
Three weeks ago, Hires appeared on the front page of the Lake City Reporter to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Dive Rite, a company founded by his father Lamar Hires, and friend Mark Leonard.
Situated on NE Washington Street in downtown Lake City, the company offers technical diving equipment to over 90 nations worldwide and has 300 dealers in the United States and another 300 abroad.
At an early age, Hires assisted in applying stickers to products as part of their employment with the company. He started working for Dive Rite at the age of 14, answering phones and assisting with sales. In 2013, Hires rejoined the organization after graduating from college.
Last month, hires stated that the company’s strong connections to diving are the source of its ongoing innovation. The company’s sixteen employees, most of whom are divers, are encouraged to enter the water frequently.
The Lake City Reporter’s 40 under 40 Young Business Professionals list, which was published in today’s edition after printing last week, includes Hires as well. Last month, Hires, who owns the company with Lamar and LeeAnn, said they aim to achieve the same success as they mark their 40th anniversary.
