The Imposter, a true crime documentary that will blow your mind, is now available to stream on Netflix. The movie, which came out in 2012, is about a boy who goes missing in the United States and whether or not he is really who he says he is.
Bart Layton directed the movie, primarily interviews with Barclay’s family members and old TV news clips, and reenacted dramatic scenes.
The BAFTA-winning documentary Nicholas Barclay is Missing is about a 13-year-old boy who has been missing for three years and is found three years later. But things didn’t turn out to be quite that easy.
So, what does The Imposter mean, and who is Nicholas Barclay? Here’s all the information you need:
Is The Imposter a True Story? What is It About?
The Imposter is based on a true story about a French con man named Frédéric Bourdin. In 1997, he pretended to be an American boy named Nicholas Patrick Barclay, who had gone missing in Texas when he was 13 years old in 1994.
In 1994, Barclay went missing after a game of basketball in San Antonio. The police thought he had been killed or taken by someone. The search was stopped because nobody had ever been found.
Unexpectedly, authorities in Spain contacted the family and told them their son was on another continent. The news made them happy at first, but they soon realized some things were different. Their Texas-born son had blonde hair and blue eyes, but this child had brown eyes, dyed hair, and a French accent.
Bourdin had a long history of pretending to be different children. To make his claim that he was Nicholas Barclay more convincing, he said that he had been taken from the US to Spain and sexually abused by different military personnel. Several officials in Spain and the US fell for his trick, and many of Barclay’s family members seemed to accept him even though he was seven years older than Barclay.
The impersonation was discovered in the end because a private investigator, Charles Parker, and an FBI agent, Nancy Fisher, had a bad feeling about it. Interpol confirmed that he was Bourdin, that he was 23 years old, and that he had a long list of crimes on his record.
While he was in jail, Bourdin told the police that the family killed the honest Nicholas, which is why they took Bourdin in as Nicholas to cover up the crime. His brother Jason, who had died at this point, is the main suspect.

Where is Nicholas Barclay Now?
Nicholas Barclay has never been found, and the case has gone chiefly cold, but private investigators still seem to be working on it. It is thought that Jason did something wrong and is the main suspect. But since he’s dead, we might never find out what happened to Barclay.
After Nicholas went missing, his brother started using drugs, and he died of a cocaine overdose in 1998. He was thought to be a possible suspect in his brother’s disappearance, and when he died, the investigation came to a halt.
Nicholas has never been found, and no one knows what happened to him. He might still be in or around San Antonio. Even though many agencies still call him a runaway, someone else could have taken him. The Charley Project, which keeps track of more than 14,000 “cold case” missing people, mainly from the US, says:
- He was a 13-year-old white boy with a petite frame and blue eyes. His light brown hair almost looked blonde, and there was a space between his front teeth.
- When he went missing, he was 4’8″ tall and weighed around 80 pounds.
- He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, black shoes, a pink backpack, and purple pants.
- The letter “J” on his left shoulder, the letter “T” between his left thumb and forefinger, and the letter “LN” on the outside of his left ankle may be the most important.
- Barclay, too, was told he had ADHD.
Where is Frédéric Bourdain Now?
Bourdin went to prison for six years because of what he did. Frédéric Bourdin pleaded guilty to stealing a passport and lying about it. He was given a six-year prison sentence. But even while in jail, Bourdin tried to keep up the story he and Barclay had made up. Indie Wire says he talked to at least one journalist regularly to get the public to care about his story.
Bourdin was sent back to France in October 2003 after serving five years in prison. For a while, he continued to live other people’s lives. It seems that his fame helped his wife find him in 2007. They have five kids together, but as of 2022, it’s not clear if they’re still together.
