A greater range of backgrounds and perspectives would be welcome in future seasons, but I’m pleased to see that this is being considered.

The participants’ histories also offer a wide range of contrasts. Alyssa has problems in the dating world despite being a successful model. Vince, a lawyer who was previously in a committed relationship, worries that he may have lost out on finding “the one.” Jeff, a blogger on travel, knew he was sexually repressed until he was twenty-one. This prevented him from seeking romantic relationships.

Since the show’s major candidates aren’t pitted against each other, there is initially less drama than in similar shows. Tensions rise, however, as more and more suitors are brought through “the portal,” each of whom must contend with the fact that the person they seek is in fact seeing other people. It can be embarrassing if there is no chemistry or if the major competitor isn’t happy to see the supporter.

The competitors become close as they share a house and wait for a date, which is one of the show’s finest aspects. Seeing how much they care about one another and how devastated they are when someone has to go home makes them more likeable.
