The Princess Diaries 3: We are not exaggerating when we state that The Princess Diaries and its sequel were the films of our youth. Meg Cabot’s novel trilogy was adapted in 2001 and 2004 with Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, and the films are now considered classics. While we hoped for a sequel for quite some time, however, it was never made. The long wait appears to be over, as Disney is reportedly developing a third film.
Contextually, Anne Hathaway plays Mia Thermopolis, a reticent American teen who discovers that she is the rightful heir to the kingdom of a little European country in the film The Princess Diaries. Mia, under the watchful eye of her grandmother (Julie Andrews) and the queen of Genovia, must determine whether or not she will accept the princess title she was born into.
Here’s everything we know so far about The Princess Diaries 3, including when we can expect it to hit our screens.

The Princess Diaries 3 Storyline
Mia Thermopolis graduates from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of International Affairs and returns to Genovia. She awaits Queen Clarisse’s abdication there. At her 21st birthday celebration, she dances with eligible men to find a marriage and meets Nicholas. Mia’s tiara slips off during the evening, and Viscount Mabrey steals it.
Mia witnesses Mabrey announce Lord Devereaux as the next male heir the next morning in Parliament. Mia can be queen if she marries within a month. Mia is horrified to learn Lord Devereaux is Nicholas when Clarisse welcomes him to the palace. Lilly Moscovitz visits unexpectedly. They search for husbands together.
Mia picks Andrew Jacoby, Duke of Kenilworth, and they’re engaged days later. Mabrey wants Nicholas to seduce Mia to break the engagement. Joe tries to convince Clarisse to pursue their relationship as her reign ends.
Queen Clarisse gives Mia an antique wooden leg decoy to ride sidesaddle for a ceremony. Joe cuts off Mia’s wooden leg when Mabrey spooks her horse with a rubber snake. She escapes to the stables, but Nicholas doesn’t comfort her. Mia and Nicholas argue about Andrew at a garden party. He kisses her as they argue. She kisses him back, then retreats. They fall into a fountain pursuing her. Mia’s actions with Nicholas must end, says Queen Clarisse.

Mia stops the Genovian Independence Day procession to aid a harassed girl. Carolina and the others are orphans, so she has a vendor give them tiaras and lets them walk in the parade. Mabrey sees it as a political move. Nicholas is moved by Mia’s care for Genovia and doubts claiming the crown. Mia designates a castle as a temporary children’s center.
World princesses visit Mia’s bachelorette slumber party. They sing karaoke on mattresses. Nicholas seeks to stop his uncle from pursuing the throne while Mia rules well. Mabrey knows Nicholas loves her but thinks Mia won’t. Mabrey urges him to pursue her, then tells his gruff servant Gretchen he plans to harm Mia’s chances of becoming queen.
Nicholas is duped into believing his father wanted him to be king. Mia practices for her coronation with Nicholas’ support. He says he’s leaving but wants to see her again. She declines because she’s guarded.
Nicholas persuades Mia to sneak out that night. By a lake, they dance, then fall asleep. A man is photographing them when they awake. Nicholas denies setting Mia up. Before she returns, scandalous footage airs. Andrew kisses Mia to check whether they have chemistry. They don’t cancel the wedding for Genovia’s sake. Mia’s mother, Helen, attends the wedding with her new husband Patrick O’Connell, and son Trevor. Gretchen tells Nicholas that Mabrey arranged the televised scandal.
Joe assures Mia of Nicholas’ innocence before the wedding. She stops in the church aisle and flees out. Mia refuses to marry Queen Clarisse. Clarisse tells her to follow her heart, something she never did, and lost Joe. Mia points out to everyone in the chapel that her single grandmother controlled Genovia for many years.
She asks the members of parliament to reconsider the law, asking if they would compel crucial women in their lives to marry without love. Mabrey suggests naming his nephew King, but Nicholas refuses. Mia recommends ending royal marriages, and Parliament agrees. Clarisse quickly marries Joe after proposing.
A week later, Nicholas comes to Mia’s coronation. On bended knee, he professes his love. The next day, Queen Clarisse steps down and Mia is crowned “Her Majesty Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Queen of Genovia” Epilogue: The Genovian Parliament now permits women, including Charlotte (Clarisse’s maid). Queen Mia creates a new children’s home with Carolina.
