The Watcher Reviews
Whoever read “The Watcher” recalls it. 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey was stalked by a stranger, according to a November 2018 New York Magazine article. Derek and Maria Broaddus found their dream home in 2014, but they soon received threatening letters. The letter writer knew a lot about the Broaddus’ home and life, including personal information that showed he or she was watching the residence.
Do you know what lives in 657 Boulevard? and Do you need to fill the house with youthful blood? drove the Broaddus into a panic. Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s fictitious account of this wild narrative is tonally adrift and veils the impossible-to-believe occurrences instead of highlighting them.
Murphy and his staff don’t trust the facts, adding more and more ludicrous twists with every episode, until the whole thing collapses under any suspension of disbelief. They don’t care about character, tone, or anything but a metronomic reveal of twists because they assume momentum will keep people watching.
The Broaddus are recast as Nora (Naomi Watts) and Dean Brannock (Bobby Cannavale), who move into 657 Boulevard with two kids instead of the genuine three. (This nearly never happened.) I don’t mind when producers use a factual story to develop something artistically fascinating, but “The Watcher” keeps adding new rooms in a haphazard and pointless way.
An opening couple of episodes of “The Watcher” set it up as a spin on “The Shining” or “The Amityville Horror” in that it’s more about a patriarch unraveling than a genuine threat. Cannavale sells Dean’s dissolving confidence in his poor answer to Brannock’s query. This actual story becomes about vulnerability, especially the kind that erodes established masculine roles.
Dean can’t please or protect his wife at work. He finds that other male residents of 657 Boulevard experienced similar suffering, one leading to a family’s extinction. The typical suburban homeowner’s stability is unstable and can destroy a family if examined too carefully.
“The Watcher” is disturbing because it taps into primordial fears. Everyone wants a safe house. We wish to protect our kids. In this period of actual crime phobia, we’re all definitely more scared of our neighbors’ homes. Who knows? What’s with all the window gazing? 657 Boulevard might have used all of these concepts or worries, but “The Watcher” doesn’t trust the audience. They may draw you in, but they didn’t make anything memorable.

The Watcher Season 2 Release Date
Since Netflix has not yet announced a premiere date for season 2 of The Watcher, we can only assume that this is because the show has not yet been renewed. If there is a second season, it seems likely that we won’t see it until at least October 2023, given Netflix’s typical release window of approximately a year for new seasons of their shows.
