‘This Is Us Season 6 Recap
First, we see Kate’s second wedding, which takes place in the near future. Madison calls Kevin an “idiot” after pushing him out of the room. Beth thinks Kate will make a beautiful bride, and she believes today will be ideal for her. Although Kate anticipates many difficulties, she is unconcerned. She receives a phone call from Toby. He congratulates her on her marriage and expresses regret that it took him so long to understand what she was trying to tell him the day they divorced.
Back in the present, Toby informs Kate that he will accept the position in Los Angeles and that he will also participate in couples counseling. He is willing to go to any length to save their marriage. But things quickly deviate from the path. Toby dislikes working in a small office while Kate is enthusiastic about her new position, and after Kate is late to couples’ counseling for the second time, Toby complains that Kate does not make it a priority. Before the session has even begun, they have an altercation in front of the therapist, during which Toby chooses to give up and storms out, enraged.
When Kevin shows up with a girl from a State Farm commercial at Kate’s engagement party in the future, she informs him that she will not be included in the family pictures. Madison and Elijah are married, but Kevin insists that he is alright, despite the fact that he is gazing wistfully at Madison.
Rebecca and Miguel are on their way to the party. Rebecca expresses her delight, although she has difficulty recalling Philip’s name. Randall needs to end a phone call about his Senate campaign since the other party is interrupting him. He’s doing a good job raising funds for it. “I Get Knocked Down” is performed by Kate on stage, during which she claims that this is the song that changed everything, prompting Philip to join her in performing “I Get Knocked Down.”
Toby appears to be in a bad mood at Haley’s 2nd birthday party. Kevin and a girl from a condom advertisement who looks physically similar to Madison are in the room. Kevin inquires as to how things are doing at work. A joke is made by Toby about how Kate’s work doesn’t pay enough money. Kate runs away, distraught, and Kevin follows her to see how she is doing. In between sobs, she muses on the question of how she will know when it is time to call it quits on this marriage. Kevin assures her that if it comes to that, she would be informed and that she and the children will be alright.
A few years later, Philip is playing Go Fish with a dark-haired boy named Jack, who appears to be approximately eight years old at the time. During his turn, he is distracted by the ring, which he is holding. Kate invites them to supper, during which Philip makes fun of her for teaching Maneater to a group of kindergarten students. Kate goes into the kitchen to fetch something to eat for dessert. When she returns to the room, Philip is down on one knee waiting for her. He proposes to her in front of her children, who hold placards that read SAY YES MOM. She responds affirmatively.
They’ve been coming here for 16 months, and Toby says they’re not sure how much longer they’ll be able to keep up the pace. Kate says that they should wait till their marriage is fixed. Their marriage counselor proposes that they eat dinner together, just the two of them, to strengthen their relationship.
After the kids have gone to bed, Toby prepares dinner for Kate at home with his family. It begins out innocently enough, with them making fun of the marriage counselor and laughing, but quickly devolves into a heated disagreement when Kate makes a proposal about how to put Haley to bed without causing a commotion. Toby ends up bursting into tears, saying that he’s sorry he’s not her father. From the bathroom, Jack shouts out for assistance. He claims that he accidentally dropped his toy in the toilet and that this means they must stop yelling and get it out.
Toby expresses regrets thereafter. To be like his parents and fight in front of the children was something he could never imagine. Kate informs him that it is time to call a halt to the marriage.
When Toby goes to a pub in the future, he runs across Philip. They have agreed to refrain from engaging in small conversations. Toby wishes to speak with Philip about how he should behave around the children. He hopes things might have worked out with him and Kate, but she is now with Philip, which he finds disappointing. Philip is not allowed to yell at or in front of the children, for whatever reason. Philip is in agreement. Toby explains American football to Philip in order for him to feel more at ease with the Pearsons.
In the present, Toby packs his belongings while Kate is with the children and relocates to a cramped, dismal apartment with no windows. Their divorce does not have to be unpleasant, and they are able to work out a co-parenting agreement with the help of a divorce mediator they met with jointly afterward. When they hear the song I Will Always Love You in the elevator, they burst out laughing.
When the Mariachi band starts playing on Philip and Kate’s first date, Philip begins to feel uncomfortable. Kate reaches out for his hand before sprinting away. He keeps up with her. She claims that she was married to a wonderful man, but that they had to swallow their feelings, which resulted in the dissolution of their marriage, and that she cannot go through it again. What exactly is Philip up to with her? He is a serial womanizer who prefers to date women that are the size of a toothpick. Philip expresses his delight in her presence. He had previously been married to a blind woman, and the couple had been happily married until they attempted to have a child. When he declined the fourth round of IVF, she claimed he was giving up on their marriage, but he countered that their life together was unrecognizable. It was five minutes later that she was struck and murdered by a drunk driver who had departed without saying goodbye. He’s making an effort to be joyful again.
A co-parenting plan is discussed in the present, and the mediator inquires as to whether they have reached an agreement. Kate claims that they had come to an agreement that Toby will move out and that she will remain in the house with the children.
Having worked hard all day, Toby goes to pick up the kids from school. Jack awakens and informs them that they are both present. Toby pulls a Kevin and asks Kate for a second chance, but she declines, claiming that they are getting along better now that they are no longer together. No, she is not interested in seeing the marriage counselor again. She believes that in the long run, this will be beneficial to everyone. Toby attempts to kiss her, but she politely declines. He is heartbroken as he goes.
Following the signing of the divorce papers, Philip catches up with Kate in Koreatown. He believed she could benefit from the company of a friend. They go to a karaoke bar and sing together.
Kate and Toby are invited to a mediation session. They put their signatures on all of the paperwork. Toby takes a few steps back before signing his name. Following that, Kate informs him that this is not how their narrative concludes. It’s clear that Toby is still a member of the family, as evidenced by his transporting the children to Miguel and Rebecca’s for Haley’s birthday celebration with her cousin and even playing football with Philip while setting up his home to make it simpler for Jack. The four of them meet up with still another woman in a coffee shop, whom Toby introduces to Philip and Kate, and many years later, the four of them all go to a bar to see an adult Jack perform.
Back to the Kate and Toby scene at the beginning of the film. Kate informs Toby that they were supposed to be together, that now they are meant to be separated, and that he will understand this one day. He assures her that he will never see it again.
As Kate prepares to marry Philip, we watch a rerun of Toby expressing that he has finally realized what he has been missing all this while.
