Known only as the Madrigals, the residents of Colombia’s Encanto region are a remarkable clan. Every member of the family save for Mirabel has received a unique gift from Encanto’s magic. However, she soon may be the Madrigal’s last hope when she realizes that the magic encircling the Encanto is now in danger.
Moana
Courageous adolescent ships off on a risky journey to save her people. Moana encounters the legendary demigod Maui along the route, who aids her in her quest to master the art of wayfinding. Together they sail over the vast ocean on an action-packed expedition, facing monstrous monsters and unfathomable odds. Along the way, Moana accomplishes the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she always sought: her own identity. “Moana” works because it uses the familiar like an express lane, driving its audience to startlingly new places by speeding them down recognizable highways. It’s expansive and excellent.
Vivo
A music-loving kinkajou embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to realize his destiny and deliver a love song for an old buddy. For another, the original songs of both films effortlessly and respectfully commemorate two unique Latin American cultures; one might envision the soundtracks of “Vivo” or “Encanto” as the gateway albums to the work of Gloria Estefan, Buena Vista Social Club, or the genre of reggaeton. Neither picture accomplishes this easily, so “Vivo” is well worth watching after you’ve watched “Encanto.”
Tangled
A timeless story is brought to life via the magic of Disney animation. Rapunzel, the lovely princess, has been imprisoned in a tower since she was a toddler after being kidnapped by an old hag. Her miraculous long blonde hair has the capacity to grant endless youth, and the evil Gothel exploits this power to keep her young. To satisfy her curiosity about the world outside her tower, Rapunzel begs a prince who has taken refuge in it to help her escape.
Over The Moon
Adventurous youthful Fei Fei constructs a rocket ship and flies it to the moon to meet the mythological goddess Change. The Disney links obviously reach further than rote homage: “Over The Moon” is directed by Glen Keane, who famously worked on “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “Beauty & The Beast,” and numerous others. He’s internalized the way these stories function. In many respects, both “Over The Moon” and “Encanto” are films that feel born of a classic paradigm but strive to make that model again on their own, distinct terms. Aside from Phillipa Soo’s outstanding portrayal of “Hamilton,” the show’s several memorable musical passages make it well worth your time.
Monster House
Adults have no faith in the claims of three teenagers (Mitchel Musso, Spencer Locke, and Sam Lerner) who claim that a live entity in the adjoining house intends to harm them. With Halloween coming, the group must find a method to destroy the edifice before innocent trick-or-treaters meet horrific ends.
Wolfwalkers
In a time of superstition and sorcery, when wolves are considered demonic and nature an evil to be tamed, a teenage apprentice hunter, Robyn, comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack. But when Robyn saves a wild local girl, Mesh, their bond leads her to discover the world of the Wolfwalers and change her into the very thing her father is tasked to kill.
The Mitchells Vs The Machines
Young Katie Mitchell embarks on a road trip with her proud parents, younger brother, and pet dog to start her first year at film school. But their plans to bond as a family quickly are disturbed when the world’s technological devices come to life to stage an uprising. The Mitchells must now band together in order to defend one another and the planet from the new technological revolution with the assistance of two benign robots.
Robin Robin
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
The one and only Spider-Man are born when Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales is bitten by a radioactive spider on the subway. When he meets Peter Parker, he soon finds that there are many others who share his particular, high-flying talents. Miles must now use his newfound powers to face the wicked Kingpin, a gigantic maniac who can open portals to other realities and bring other versions of Spider-Man into our world.
Kubo & The Two Strings
Young Kubo’s (Art Parkinson) tranquil existence comes tumbling down when he unwittingly summons a malevolent spirit from the past. Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey) to unearth a secret legacy. He must fight the Moon King (Ralph Fiennes) and other gods and demons with a mystical instrument in order to preserve his family and uncover the truth about the death of his father, one of the greatest samurai warriors in history.
