A crash between two cars in Chase over the weekend killed one person and seriously hurt another.
Saturday at 4:40 p.m., the accident happened at the corner of Highway 10 and Depot Street in Chase. Two people were taken by helicopter to a hospital in Grand Rapids, but the second person died from injuries caused by accident.
Sgt. Ron Bullis of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said that a pickup truck and a Jeep were simultaneously in the same spot on the road, which caused the accident. At this point, not many details are known for sure.
Bullis said, “One of the cars had the right of way, and the other didn’t.” “The pickup truck was going east on U.S. 10 without a stop sign or anything, and the other car, which was going north on South Depot Street, drove into the path of the pickup. The car coming from the north went into the travel lane. Right now, it’s not clear if they were turning or going straight. At first glance, it looked like the pickup truck should have gone first.

Bullis said that the Michigan State Police accident reconstruction team had been asked to investigate the accident to learn more about what might have happened.
He said the investigation and report on what happened next could take up to a month.
“All airbags went off, and the cars are likely totaled,” Bullis said. “At this point, there is no evidence that alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident, and we can’t guess the speed until the official reports are done. Currently, there have been no citations, and no one is looking into a civil or criminal liability.”
The person who was seriously hurt in the accident has since been moved to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital and is expected to recover fully.
