LEOMINSTER, Massachusetts — A school community is grieving the loss of a 16-year-old girl who died in a crash in Leominster that also critically injured three other students. Around 7 p.m. on Thursday, Massachusetts State Police said that troopers responding to a complaint of a single-vehicle crash on the northbound side of Route 190 discovered a yellow 2001 Ford Mustang that had driven off the road and rolled over on its roof in the woods.

Ayer Shirley Regional High School’s 11th-grade student, one of the casualties, was declared dead at the scene, according to officials from the school and the police. Along with a 16-year-old girl from Shirley, an 18-year-old male from Bolton, and an 18-year-old man who was thought to be driving, she was riding in the car. The names of individuals hurt in the collision have not been made public. According to a preliminary inquiry, the Mustang’s driver lost control after moving to the left to avoid another car. Investigators believe that excessive speed may have been a contributing role in the collision. The inquiry is being conducted by state police detectives assigned to the Worcester District Attorney’s Office.
