The Last Frontier is where True Detective is going. The much anticipated fourth season of the popular HBO anthology series is returning after a hiatus of nearly five years, and it’s placing the action in Alaska, a far cry from the steamy, humid locales of previous True Detective seasons.
This season of True Detective, officially titled True Detective: Night Country, stars Kali Reis and Jodie Foster as two investigators entrusted with figuring out a mystery disappearance that happened over the long winter night.
Season 4 of the crime drama anthology has come after a lengthy journey. Since its 2014 premiere, True Detective has seen several highs and lows, with seasons one and two being particularly significant and embarrassing, respectively.
2019 saw the release of the most recent season, which starred Mahershala Ali. Following that season, HBO terminated creator Nic Pizzolatto’s contract, casting doubt on True Detective’s future. However, HBO said in March 2022 that writer-director Issa Lopez and executive producer Barry Jenkins were developing a fresh approach to True Detective.
True Detective Season 4 Release Date
HBO revealed on September 27 that the first episode of True Detective: Night Country will air on January 14, 2024. True Detective Season 4 was supposed to debut in January 2023 (the teaser trailer closes with a notation indicating it’s “coming this year”). However, in late August, Deadline revealed that HBO has rescheduled the release of the fourth season.
True Detective Season 4 First Look
HBO tweeted the first picture from the series on February 15. Stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis are seen in the picture looking very spiffy against Alaska’s barren, snowy backdrop.

True Detective Season 4 Storyline
Season 4 is traveling to the freezing North after the previous three seasons were set in warm places like Louisiana and Southern California. The story takes place in Ennis, Alaska, a village so far north that polar night occurs there. The eight men who run the Tsalal Arctic Research Station disappear without a word as that long winter night draws to a close.
“Must confront their pasts and the dark truths lying underneath the Arctic ice,” according to HBO’s official logline, are the detectives on the case: Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) and Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster). It sounds like a fascinating departure from the vaguely otherworldly and broodingly masculine model Nic Pizzolatto created in Season 1.
Who’s Behind True Detective Season 4?
Tigers Are Not Afraid director Issa López, a Mexican filmmaker, is the showrunner, executive producer, writer, and director of every episode. Jodie Foster not only plays the lead role, but she also serves as executive producer. Along with Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak, Barry Jenkins, the filmmaker of Moonlight, serves as an executive producer through his production company, PASTEL.
Showrunner Chris Mundy of Ozark and writer Alan Page Arriaga, whose past work includes a Fear the Walking Dead episode in Spanish, are among the writers of other EPs. There are EP credits for Nic Pizzolatto, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, and Cary Joji Fukunaga.
According to Deadline, producers Princess Daazhraii Johnson and Cathy Tagnak Rexford oversaw an Iñupiaq advisory committee that provided advice on Alaska Native culture for the program.
True Detective Season 4 Cast
The cast of True Detective: Night Country is superb, as one might anticipate. The ensemble, which includes well-known faces from HBO’s repertory players and Indigenous actors making their HBO debuts, is led by two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster.
The second-billed actress, Kali Reis, was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead after making her screen debut in the 2021 thriller Catch the Fair One. Kali Reis was formerly a professional boxer.
According to HBO, she also works as a motivational speaker and supports the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls campaign. She educates Indigenous women how to defend themselves verbally and physically.
