True Detective Season 4 Storyline
Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (No Time to Die) and starring Matthew McConaughey (Rust Cohle) and Woody Harrelson (Marty Hart), HBO’s anthology crime drama series True Detective premiered in 2014. The eight episodes that made up Season 1 were universally praised by reviewers and viewers alike, resulting in an 87% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a 100% Audience Score. The show has aired for three seasons, with a potential fourth season in the works.
Season 1 of True Detective, set in Louisiana, contains a fractured timeline pieced back together gradually. In 1995, Rust and Marty were hired to investigate the ritualistic slaying of a young woman called Dora Lange. As this happens, the series skips ahead to 2012, where we find Rust and Marty, who hasn’t spoken since their bitter breakup in 2002, being interrogated about the reopened case they previously worked on.
While the season progresses, Rust and Marty have setbacks in their personal lives and struggle with their moral compass as they investigate an increasingly complex case. There is a conspiracy involving a fictional city named Carcosa and a mysterious figure known only as the “Yellow King,” The police link additional killings and disappearances to Lange’s case. Season-ending recaps ensure that viewers are up-to-date on all the latest happenings in 2012. After reuniting after nearly two decades, Rust and Marty identify the serial killer they’ve been tracking.

After many years and a severe decline in hope and faith in humanity, Rust and Marty have finally uncovered the truth about who killed Lange and many others. They met the man 17 years ago, in episode 3 of the show, when Rust chats with a man on a lawnmower outside the school. The great-grandson of Sam Tuttle, he goes by the name Errol Childress. A tall man and a green-eared spaghetti monster rolled into one. He is the man with the scars on his face.
Police show up at the murderer’s house and barge in. When Errol refuses to listen to Rust and instead takes off running, the latter pursues him outside the home, where he witnesses further proof of Errol’s mental instability. After a while, the pair reaches what looks to be the legendary Carcosa, a vaulted chamber. Because of his drug use and other causes, Rust eventually experiences a vision at the worst possible time.
Errol then turns on Rust amid his vision, stabbing him in the stomach with a knife. Until Marty comes and shoots the killer in the shoulder, the detective holds his own against Errol’s size and Rust’s new wounded. Once Errol’s attention is diverted, Marty is left vulnerable to further harm. Due to Errol’s assassination attempts, Marty appears in grave danger. Fortunately, Rust can maintain consciousness long enough to fire a bullet directly into Errol’s skull.
