Season one takes place in Louisiana and follows two Louisiana State Police officers (Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, and Tory Kittles) as they track down a serial killer with occult ties over the course of 17 years. True Detective Season 4 Storyline
By the fifth or sixth episode, most True Detective season three viewers had solved the riddle. So when an old man gave a long, expository monologue in the climax to fill in all the holes, it felt like a middle school book report on a novel you know well.
The story was well-told, so I indulged. True Detective season three excelled at portraying a feeling, a particular sense of being alive right now in a world that feels trapped in byzantine arrangements struck by the powerful to abuse the vulnerable, transactions we hardly grasp and can only glimpse amid all-consuming darkness.
The season three finale, “Now Am Found,” showed that Pizzolatto is a softy. Yes, Hays disappeared into the Vietnam bush, his life’s tragedy. Before that, it showed scenes of people who had experienced the worst of humanity reaching out to each other and trying to form something new, even a family.
True Detective often argues that the most revolutionary act of resistance is to act like your life and that of everyone you love have inherent dignity because the world is set up to convince you otherwise. In a time when the rich will literally buy children, drug them, and then try to convince them they are someone else, the idea that breaking free of that cycle and pursuing your own destiny is disobedience made sense.

In season one, I thought these prosaic answers were a cop-out to avoid dealing with the full breadth of the plot and the repercussions of such a massive conspiracy. Season two likewise had severely tortured children entangled in a big conspiracy, but it lacked the supernatural vibe of the first and third seasons. In season three, I realized Pizzolatto tells the best tiny stories.
We are all stuck in a greater machine that grinds up too many of us to keep running. The machine cannot be stopped or understood. However, living a decent life may slow it down slightly. True Detective is a noir about how investigating one mystery leads to many and how you can never find an acceptable answer because you can never comprehend why anyone does anything.
You can explain that a mother kidnapped a little child because she was heartbroken over losing her own daughter, but you can never explain why an entire system of people went along with her notion because she had money and influence. Explaining why some people are protected and others are not is impossible. A dark force drives the True Detective universe and ours, and all you may ever see is this thin strip of light where you stand. You can live there. That’s sufficient.
