The upcoming sequel to the 1996 disaster epic Twister, titled Twisters, will have a fresh plot and characters while aiming to revive some of that classic dusty action. The original picture takes place in Oklahoma during a devastating dust storm and tornado outbreak, as the title implies.
A group of dedicated storm chasers has arrived at the location with the intention of deploying a research device. Twister received two Oscar nominations, one for Best Visual Effects and the other for Best Sound, for its technically impressive qualities.
After almost twenty years following the original 1997 release, the sequel to Twister was finally given the go-ahead. In 2020, Universal Pictures approached Joseph Kosinski, who had directed Top Gun: Maverick, about directing Twisters.
A year down the road, Helen Hunt offered to pen and direct the follow-up. But those ideas were later scrapped in favour of a legacy sequel being written by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), thus they never got off the ground. Twisters may be an enormous modern disaster film that aims to cash in on the popularity of the cult classic.
Twisters Release Date
According to Deadline, July 19, 2024, is the official date of the Twister sequel’s release. Production on Twisters was supposed to have wrapped up by July 2023 (according to KWTV-DT, an Oklahoma City-based TV station), but the SAG-AFTRA strike forced them to postpone the wrap.
Principal photography had begun in May of that year. Warner Bros. will be in charge of distribution internationally, while Universal will be in charge of the film’s American release.
Twisters Cast
Despite the lack of information regarding their characters, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell will be spearheading the Twister 2 cast. There has been much speculation, but no confirmation, that the characters played by Powell or Edgar-Jones will be related to the ones played by Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton in the original film.
Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), Brandon Perea (Nope), and Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders) are just a few of the famous faces that will be joining the cast of the upcoming Twister sequel.
Helen Hunt will not be returning as Dr. Jo Harding in Twisters, as confirmed by Glen Powell, who dispelled rumours to the contrary. Although a plethora of additional supporting actors have been disclosed, the identity of their characters remain a mystery at this time. Here are the items on that list:

Who’s Making ‘Twisters’?
Lee was Twisters is being directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Isaac Chung, who was responsible for the highly praised film Minari. Chung has never before dabbled in high-budget, action-packed tentpoles like this.
Joseph Kosinski, the renegade filmmaker known for his work on upcoming Formula One films starring Brad Pitt, was originally attached to direct Top Gun but stepped down because of scheduling conflicts.
Frank Marshall of the Kennedy/Marshall Company will produce the picture, and Mark L. Smith, who wrote the screenplay for the forthcoming drama Boys in the Boat, will pen the script. Smith previously collaborated with Hollywood heavyweight George Clooney on the screenplay for the Netflix film Midnight Sky, in which Clooney also starred and directed.
Twisters will also have Warner Bros. Pictures’ financial backing. Sara Scott and Jacqueline Garell of Universal Studios and Ashley Jay Sandberg of Kennedy/Marshall Studios are the studio executives in charge of the production.
The director of the first 1996 picture, Jan de Bont, recently said in an interview that no one had contacted him for advice on the sequel, therefore he is not connected in any way with it.
Shooting for Twisters got underway in May 2023 in Oklahoma City, with Chickasha, Orkarche, El Reno, Spencer, and Cashion serving as additional locales. Nevertheless, production came to a halt in July.
