ANKARA, Turkey — Two Spanish tourists died and three others were injured on Tuesday when a hot air balloon on a sightseeing tour of volcanic rock formations in central Turkey made a harsh landing, according to the officials who were in charge of the investigation.
The incident took place in the Nevsehir province of Turkey’s Cappadocia region, where hot air balloons are commonly flown over the region’s picturesque gorges and volcanic cones.
According to a statement released by the office of the governor of Nevsehir, the catastrophe was brought on by a “sudden rise in the wind.” It was reported that emergency personnel arrived at the scene of the accident in a timely manner.

On board, the hot air balloon was a total of 30 people: 28 passengers and 2 crew members. According to the statement, none of the people who were hurt was in a condition that was considered to be life-threatening.
The region of Cappadocia is well-known for its “fairy chimney” rock formations, underground settlements, and cathedrals cut into the sides of mountains. This region is located approximately 300 kilometres (190 miles) south of the capital city of Ankara.
Each year, the region is visited by millions upon millions of tourists.
