Sacramento officials say two women died when a man in a stolen SUV ran a red light and crashed into them. The police caught that man while he was trying to steal another car. Later, they found out that he had been drinking.

In a news release, the California Highway Patrol said that the man, 22 years old and from Sacramento, ran a red light going north at the intersection of French and Florin roads and hit two women west on Florin. The crash caused the car the women were in to hit a nearby white van.

Mark Leavitt, a spokesman for the CHP in South Sacramento, said that the two women died at the scene. A 49-year-old woman from Sacramento was driving, and a 42-year-old woman from Sacramento was riding with her.

Sgt. Amar Gandhi of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said that one of their deputies heard the crash and found the suspect trying to leave the scene. Gandhi says that the deputy caught him while trying to steal another nearby car.

Gandhi said the sheriff’s office had heard about a purse theft before the crash. The suspect in the Florin Road crash had tried to steal a woman’s car keys at her home near French and Gerber roads in Sacramento, but she was able to fight him off.

Gandhi says that the man, who was driving the Toyota RAV4 when it crashed, then stole another car near Billfish Way.

In a news release, CHP said the man stole the Toyota at 10 a.m. by threatening the driver with a knife.

“The damage to the left side of the car [of the victim] is terrible. Due to the impact, the two people who were in the car at the time didn’t have much of a chance, “Leavitt said. On Florin Perkins Road, the CHP has closed lanes going both ways.

CHP said that once the man is medically cleared, he will be arrested on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony DUI causing injury/death, and felony hit and run.

Officials haven’t said anything about who the man and the two women are.
