BBC said that the Lancashire Police had given a 42-year-old man from London a fixed penalty with a conditional offer. The police did not say the man’s name. “Following the circulation of a video on social media showing an individual failing to wear a seat belt while a passenger in a moving car in Lancashire we have today (Friday, January 20) issued a 42-year-old man from London with a conditional offer of fixed penalty,” Lancashire Police said in a statement.
Sunak apologised on Thursday for making a “short mistake of judgement” when he took off his seatbelt to make a video while driving in north-west England.
“That was a brief error of judgement. The PM removed his seatbelt to film a small clip. He fully accepts this was a mistake and apologises about it,” Sunak’s spokesperson said. “The Prime Minister believes everyone should wear a seatbelt,” he added.
After Sunak’s video went viral, a representative said, “He fully accepts this was a mistake and has apologised.” He also said that he would pay the fine.

In the UK, people who aren’t wearing seat belts can be fined £100 ($124), and if the case goes to court, the fine can go up to £500 ($620).
Angela Rayner, the deputy leader of Labour, said in a tweet that Sunak was a “total liability” after seeing his video.
The Liberal Democrats said that, as the second prime minister of the country to be fined by the police, he has shown the same lack of respect for the rules as Boris Johnson.
This is the second time that a fixed penalty notice has been sent to the prime minister.
In April 2022, he got a fine along with then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carie for going to a birthday party during a Covid lockdown.
But in defence of Sunak, Blackpool South Benton’s Conservative MP said, “Everyone makes mistakes.” He also said that the police should focus on serious crimes in the neighbourhood.
In the UK, if you break the law and get a fixed penalty notice, you have to pay a fine or fight it within 28 days. If someone wants to fight the fine, the police will look into the case and decide if the fine should be taken away.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents in the UK said, “Everyone should take seatbelt laws seriously, whoever and wherever they are.”
