The 61-year-old actor received two tracheotomies, which have a negative impact on his ability to talk effectively, after receiving a stage four cancer diagnosis in 2015 after a tumour erupted.
In 2017, Kilmer claimed to have had “a healing of cancer,” and in 2018, he reported that, following tracheotomies and chemotherapy, he had been cancer-free for four years.
In an appearance on Extra to promote their father’s new documentary Val, Mercedes and Jack revealed that the Top Gun star is doing well.
He’s doing fine, said Mercedes, 29. He is still healing. The healing process is just as difficult as the disease itself.
Jack, 26, said when asked who had been there for Kilmer during his illness: “Everyone has been so kind; it makes me so emotional.” It’s really lovely to see people working together.

With the claim that their father was present at the premiere “in spirit,” Kilmer’s children Mercedes and Jack, whom he shares with his ex-wife Joanne Whalley, have been promoting the Amazon Prime Video film Val on his behalf.
Through hundreds of hours of home movies and other videos Kilmer recorded throughout the years, the film explores his personal and professional life.

In the film, Kilmer is heard speaking through a voice box and confessing: “I’m still healing, and it’s tough to talk and be understood.”
The movie is narrated by his son Jack utilising his father’s remarks.
Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon make guest cameos in Val, which include material from his early films to his cancer diagnosis.
Kilmer has been promoting Val on Instagram even though he was unable to make it to the premiere. He wrote: “Driving through LA I felt myself flying over the city.” This party is very amazing.
