As a fictitious character, Velma Dinkley appears in the Scooby-Doo cartoon series. She typically wears a loose orange turtleneck sweater, a short red pleated skirt (or an A-line skirt, or sometimes shorts), knee socks, Mary Jane shoes, and a pair of black square spectacles, which she constantly misplaces. She is considered the “brains” of the team. In 2021, Velma will star in her own HBO Max original series, which was revealed on February 10 of that year.
The show, simply titled Velma, would be aimed at an older demographic and will feature a self-conscious, Indian-origin protagonist who is aware of her normal white appearance. The trademark for the series was listed as abandoned on July 11, 2022, however, HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys said in a message sent out in August that production was continuing, and that sneak peeks of the show will be shown at New York Comic Con on October 6, 2022.

The show’s premise is similar to that of the original “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!” series, which premiered more than fifty years ago, with the exception that Velma will serve as the show’s lead crime fighter and investigator. Also, there will be violence and explicit jokes in this show. We should also keep an eye out for guest appearances from Daphne and Shaggy, two of the founding members of the Mystery Gang.
On May 18 at a Warner Bros. event, Kaling showed off an episode still from the show. The sneak peek shows a horrific murder scene in a women’s locker room, so it’s clear that the show is not meant for younger viewers.

Velma is not meant to reflect the shy, bookworm form of the character seen in earlier iterations. This is one of several reasons why Kaling decided to cast a South Asian actress in the character of Velma in this episode. She told the audience during the Warner Bros. presentation, “If people freak out about it, it’s none of my business.”
Kaling is adamant in her commitment to injecting a little bit of her own culture into the character of Velma by depicting her as South Asian, despite the backlash she experienced on Twitter. The Emmy-nominated actor and writer said in July 2021 on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” that the audience reaction had taught them to “be really cautious with this character, which we will,” and that the character would go on to have “so many amazing experiences.”
Velma HBO Max Release Date
There is no word yet on when “Vema” will be in theatres, but we should be getting more information regarding the movie very soon.
First Velma Images Reveal Adults-Only Scooby-Doo
The first image from the Velma Dinkley-centric Scooby-Doo spinoff on HBO Max, which will be led by Mindy Kaling, suggests that it won’t be a show for children. The first viewing of the photograph occurred at the upfronts event for Warner Bros. Discovery. It depicts Velma stumbling onto the dismembered body of a young girl in a locker room full of naked people who look on in horror.
And while we’re discussing new shows with a female protagonist, I’m thrilled to share the first of many images from my upcoming animated adult comedy Velma, which is based on the popular heroine from Scooby-Doo. In February, HBO Velma was launched by Max, who marketed it as an adult comedy.
Scooby-Doo fans have been vocal in their disapproval of Kaling’s casting as a South Asian Velma, despite the fact that she has been linked with the project from the beginning. Indeed, Haley Kiyoko has already played the part in Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins and Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster. She has never hitherto been portrayed as South Asian, but that changes now.
WarnerMedia’s Tom Ascheim stated in June 2021 that one of the reasons Kaling joined Velma was because of the opportunity to travel. Scenario: “Scooby-Doo as if Velma were East Asian and from a different planet. So, in that version, which will first air on HBO Max, we have our four main protagonists seen through a different perspective, but there is no dog and no vehicle.
