A member of Gladys Knight and the Pips who was there from the beginning has died. Reports say that William Guest died on Thursday at 74 from heart failure, which made his heart swell.
Monique, the Guest’s daughter, said in a statement that she would miss her father. She said, “My heart is broken, but I know his memory will live on.”
The guest is Knight’s cousin. He sang background vocals on “Heard it Through the Grapevine,” a top 10 hit in 1967, and “Midnight Train to Georgia,” an impact in 1973.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame added Gladys Knight and the Pips in 1996.

Who were The Pips?
Gladys, her brother Merald, sister Brenda, cousins William and Elenor Guest, and another cousin, James “Pip” Woods, created the Pips musical group in 1952.
When they started touring at the end of the 1950s, Edward Patten, a cousin of Gladys, and Langston George, a friend, took Brenda Knight’s and Eleanor Guest’s places.

Gladys returned in 1964 and remained together until their breakup in 1989.
After receiving a diabetes diagnosis, Edward Patten went suddenly in February 2005 due to the condition. Congestive heart failure caused the death of William Guest in 2015. Eleanor Guest, a founder of the Pips, passed away from heart failure in 1997.
