Which Dutton is in Africa in 1923: The new Yellowstone prequel series, 1923, premieres in just a few days, so now is the perfect time to familiarise yourself with the series cast and characters. The fact that 1923 is an origin story raises the question of how the individuals are connected to their Yellowstone counterparts. Also, what is the relationship between Harrison Ford’s Jacob Dutton and Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III? Saddle up because we’ll fill you in on the history of the Dutton family in Yellowstone and how Jacob Dutton, who lived in 1923, relates to the Duttons of today.
Who was Jacob Dutton in ‘1923’?
The year 1883 is when we can find the solution. You may recall John’s notorious ancestor, James Dutton (Tim McGraw). In any case, James’ brother is discussed extensively in the play and Yellowstone. That’s because, in 1923, Ford portrayed the character of Jacob Dutton. As we see in a flashback at the beginning of Yellowstone Season 4, when James passes away, Jacob and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) take over running the family ranch.
What Happens with James and Margaret Dutton in 1923?
Elsa Dutton, played by Isabel May and the main character and narrator of the series, died in an unfortunate way at the end of 1883. James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) only had their son John with them at the time (Audie Rick). During flashbacks in Season 4 of Yellowstone, we see that the couple has had another son, Spencer. However, it turns out that the 1893 scene in which James Dutton was severely hurt and Margaret screamed was his death scene.

Who Are Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren in 1923?
In a voiceless story told by Elsa, we learn that Margaret sent for James’s brother, Jacob (Harrison Ford). When Jacob got to what is now the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, he found Margaret froze to death and her two sons almost starving to death. He raised them as his own with the help of his wife, Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren). When the story began in 1923, Jacob had built the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch and turned his holdings into an empire, but that empire is now in decline because of drought and the Great Depression.

Who Are the Other Characters in 1923?
The first episode of 1923 showed us that Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) lived through World War I, but he was so traumatized by what he saw that he didn’t go home afterward. Instead, he went to Africa and started hunting games there. John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale) is his Uncle Jacob’s right-hand man on the ranch, and his son Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) is young, reckless, and fiercely loyal to his family and the farm.
Elizabeth Strafford, played by Michelle Randolph, is going to marry Jack. She is a strong-willed young woman getting married into a challenging situation that doesn’t get any better when her wedding has to be done because of the ranch business.
Teonna Rainwater is a young Native American woman played by Aminah Nieves. She attends the School for American Indians in Montana, which the church runs. Sister Mary (Jennifer Ehle), one of the nuns, hurts her, but their relationship could improve and change over time. Since her last name is Rainwater, we’ll assume she has something to do with Yellowstone’s Chairman, Thomas Rainwater.
The rest of the cast is made up of ranch foreman Zane (Brian Geraghty), a rancher named Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn), who is very bad for Jacob Dutton, Sheriff William McDowell (Robert Patrick), a friend of the Duttons, and Donald Whitfield (Timonthy Dalton), a wealthy, scary man who is used to getting what he wants.
What Can We Expect From 1923?
A trailer for 1923 hints that it will have the same mix of action, violence, romance, and mystery as 1883, which was set during the Westward Expansion, drought, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. Mirren plays Cara Dutton as a powerful matriarch. In the first scenes of 1923, she kills one of the Duttons’ enemies, so we can expect to see how the story leads up to that moment as the season progresses. So far, 1923 seems to have the same big ideas as Yellowstone. The Duttons are constantly challenged by nature and the people who live near their land. All of this is set against a classic Taylor Sheridan background of epic scenery and a soaring musical score that makes it feel like a television on the scale of a great movie.
