Princess Diana of Wales (Diana Frances Spencer; 1 July 1961 – 31 August 1997) was a member of the British royal family. She gave birth to Princes William and Harry and was the first wife of Charles III, Prince of Wales. Diana became an international symbol thanks to her activism and elegance, which led to enduring fame and unparalleled scrutiny of her private life.

Diana was raised on the royal family’s Sandringham estate due to her birth into the British aristocracy. While working as a nursery teacher’s aide, she met Prince Charles, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II, and they became engaged in 1981. They married the following year at St. Paul’s Cathedral, and she became Princess of Wales, a title for which she received a warm reception from the British. Their two boys, William and Harry, were second and third in line to the British throne at birth.

Princess Diana Early Life

She was born on July 1, 1961, at Park House in Sandringham, Norfolk, to Charles Spencer and Diana Spencer. John Spencer, Viscount Althorp (1924-1992), and Frances Spencer, Viscountess Althorp (née Roche; 1936-2004), had five children, and she was the fourth. Cynthia Spencer, Countess Spencer, and Ruth Roche, Baroness Fermoy, her grandmothers, were both ladies-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, continuing a long tradition of strong ties between the Spencer family and the British royal family.

She was named Diana Frances after her mother and Lady Diana Spencer, a potential Princess of Wales and many times-great-aunt, after deliberating over a name for a week when her parents were hoping for a male to carry on the family line. Due to her duchess-like demeanor as a youngster, she was also affectionately called “Duch” inside the family.

On November 1, 1977, at 16, Diana had her first meeting with Charles, Prince of Wales, the Queen’s eldest son and heir presumptive. At the time, he was dating her older sister, Sarah, and he was 29 years old. In the summer of 1980, Charles and Diana attended a country weekend, when she watched him play polo and he developed a genuine interest in her as a future wife. He took their relationship to the next level by taking her on a weekend sailing trip to Cowes aboard the royal yacht Britannia.

In the wake of this, during a weekend in November 1980, he was invited to Balmoral Castle (the royal family’s Scottish seat) to meet his family. The monarchs, including the Queen, the Queen Mother, and the Duke of Edinburgh, welcomed her warmly. Later, in London, Charles began courting Diana. The couple’s engagement was kept secret for two and a half weeks after Charles asked for her hand in marriage on February 6, 1981, at Windsor Castle.

Princess Margaret, Charles’ aunt, burnt “very personal” letters that Diana had sent to the Queen Mother in 1993. Margaret’s action was “understandable” in light of her desire to “protect her mother and other members of the family,” according to biographer William Shawcross, but “regrettable from a historical viewpoint.”

Although Diana first held Camilla Parker Bowles responsible for the strain on her marriage, she later came to suspect that her husband was having extramarital affairs of his own. In a letter to her butler Paul Burrell dated October 1993, Diana revealed her fear that Charles had fallen in love with Tiggy Legge-Bourke, his assistant and former nanny for his sons, and was plotting to have Diana murdered “to make the route open for him to marry Tiggy.”

Diana resented Legge-Bourke and her bond with the young princes because Charles had recruited her as a youthful companion for his kids while they were in his care. On June 29, 1994, Prince Charles spoke with Jonathan Dimbleby for a television interview to better communicate with the public. After his marriage to Diana “irretrievably broke down,” he revealed in the interview, he resumed their connection in 1986. The following year, Anna Pasternak’s book Princess in Love told Diana and James Hewitt’s affair in great detail, with Hewitt serving as the book’s primary source. After the book came out, Diana was distressed and furious. Still, Pasternak claimed that Hewitt had acted with Diana’s approval to prevent the affair from being included in Andrew Morton’s second book.

Who Is King Charles III?

Charles III, also known as Charles Philip Arthur George, was born on November 14, 1948, and he currently serves as King of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth states. He became King on September 8, 2022, after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died. Before his accession, he served as Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay from 1952 until his coronation. He also held the title of Prince of Wales from July 26, 1958, until his coronation, making him the longest-serving Prince of Wales in British history. Charles, at age 73, also holds the record for the oldest monarch of the United Kingdom. William IV had been the oldest monarch to date, at age 64.

He was the first grandson of King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, and the first child of his mother and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Charles was born in Buckingham Palace. His father had attended both Cheam and Gordonstoun schools, so that’s where he went to elementary and secondary school, too. A year later, he attended Geelong Grammar School’s Timbertop location in Victoria, Australia.

Charles joined the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy after graduating from Cambridge with a BA in 1971 and serving until 1976. He wed Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, and they produced two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. They separated in 1996 after both partners had extramarital encounters that became public knowledge. The following year, Diana was killed in a vehicle crash in Paris. They had been together for years before Charles finally tied the knot with Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005.

Princess Diana And King Charles’s Divorce

The interview was the deciding factor. The Queen reportedly sent letters to Charles and Diana on 20 December, advising them to get a divorce. After two weeks of deliberation, the Queen made her decision, supported by the Prime Minister and top Privy Counsellors, as reported by the BBC. Soon, Charles issued a written statement confirming his agreement to the divorce. After negotiations with Charles and officials of the Queen, Diana declared her consent in February 1996, infuriating Buckingham Palace with her unilateral announcement of the divorce arrangement and its contents.

The couple settled on divorce terms in July 1996. As a result of Diana’s allegations that Charles’s assistant Tiggy Legge-Bourke had aborted his kid, Legge-Bourke had directed her attorney Peter Carter-Ruck to seek an apology. Diana’s private secretary Patrick Jephson quit just before the scandal emerged, subsequently saying that she had “exulted in accusing Legge-Bourke of having had an abortion.” Martin Bashir allegedly fostered the rumor that Legge-Bourke had an abortion so that he could interview Diana on Panorama.

Divorce was finalized on August 28, 1996, after the decree nisi was issued on July 15, 1996. Dianna’s attorney, Anthony Julius, negotiated a settlement that included a one-time payment of £17 million (equivalent to £33,947,736 in 2021) and an annual payment of £400,000. To protect their privacy, the couple signed a confidentiality agreement that forbade them to discuss their divorce or their time together. A few days before, letters of the patent were published outlining broad guidelines for administering royal titles the following divorce.

Diana, Princess of Wales, replaced “Her Royal Highness,” which she had previously been addressed as. She was still respected as a member of the royal family and given the same status she had enjoyed throughout her marriage because she was the prince’s mother destined to become king. According to reports, the Queen wished to allow Diana to keep using the style of Royal Highness after her divorce, but Charles had requested that she stop.

According to Tina Brown, Prince Philip had warned Diana almost a year prior, saying, “If you don’t behave, my girl, we’ll take your title away.” Diana allegedly responded, “My title is much older than yours, Philip.” Prince William reportedly reassured his mother, saying, “Don’t worry, Mummy, I will give it back to you one day when I am King.”
