Brittney Griner, an American basketball star who has been in jail in Russia since February on a drug charge, pleaded guilty on the second day of her trial on Thursday. What you need to know is listed below.
Who is Brittney Griner?
Brittney Griner is one of the best women’s basketball players in the world. She is 6 feet 9 inches tall and has been a WNBA all-star eight times. In her nine seasons, she has led the league in points per game twice and blocks per game eight times. Griner became well-known when she played college basketball at Baylor University. There, she was the seventh NCAA women’s player to dunk in a game, and she was one of the best college players in history.
Griner came out as a lesbian in 2013, right after she was picked first in the WNBA draught. She was the first openly gay athlete to get a sponsorship deal from Nike. Griner is just one of many athletes who have spoken out against playing the national anthem before games.
“I really think we shouldn’t play the national anthem during our season,” Griner said in 2020 when there were protests for social justice after the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. “I think that’s how much of a stand we should make. I don’t say this to make fun of our country. My dad was a police officer in Vietnam for 30 years. Before basketball, I aspired to be a police officer. I am proud to be an American.”

Why Was Brittney Griner Arrested?
Griner has been in Russian custody since February 17, when she was arrested at Sheremetyevo International Airport outside of Moscow on suspicion of carrying illegal cannabis oil vape cartridges.
On Thursday, on the second day of his trial in Moscow, Griner admitted to having cannabis oil on his person. Reports say she could get 10 years in prison, but there are hopes that Russia and the U.S. will agree to some kind of prisoner exchange, which can’t happen until Griner’s case is over in Russia.
“Your Honor, I want to plead guilty,” Griner said in court. “But that wasn’t the case. She then asked to give her testimony at a later time, saying that she needed more time to get ready. Her next court date is on July 14.
Is Brittany Griner in a Relationship?
Griner wed Cherelle Watson in June 2019. She now goes by Griner’s last name. In mid-June, Cherelle Griner said she has “zero trust” in how the U.S. government is handling the situation. This was after a planned phone call between the two did not happen because of what the State Department called a “logistical error” on the part of the U.S. Mission in Russia.
Cherelle Griner said, “I think it’s wrong, and I don’t trust our government at all right now.” “If I can’t trust you to answer a call on a Saturday when you’re not at work, how can I trust you to try to get my wife to come home? Because that is much harder than getting a Saturday call.”
