Wilko Johnson Cause of Death: At the age of 75, WILKO JOHNSON passed away. He was the guitarist for the British pub rock band Dr. Feelgood and is widely regarded as a pivotal figure in the development of punk. “This is the statement we never wanted to make & we do so with a very sorrowful heart: Wilko Johnson has died,” Johnson’s Twitter tweeted on Tuesday.
On November 21st, he quietly left this world in the comfort of his own home. Please know that the family appreciates your privacy at this difficult time. Wilko Johnson, rest in peace.” The official cause of death was not disclosed. Almost ten years ago, Johnson revealed that he had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. In 2014, he released an album he considered to be his swan song, titled Going Back Home. Despite this, Johnson continued to perform music until his death, despite the fact that a big tumor had been removed from his body during the operation.
Johnson was a key member of Dr. Feelgood and the band’s main guitarist. The band first gained attention in the early ’70s by covering R&B songs in British pubs and then went on to release their debut album, Down By the Jetty. After two additional studio albums and the critically praised live LP Stupidity in 1976, Johnson quit Dr. Feelgood in 1977 to form his own Wilko Johnson Band. Wilko Johnson Cause of Death
Wilko Johnson Cause of Death: According to BBC News, Wilko Johnson, the pivotal guitarist who helped launch the pub rock scene in the UK with Dr. Feelgood, passed away on Monday (November 21) at the age of 75. The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson, released in 2015, details Johnson’s miraculous recovery from a deadly diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 2013.
Dr. Feelgood, an Essex, United Kingdom R&B band formed in Canvey Island in the early 1970s, was known for Johnson’s wacky riffs and juddering guitar stabs. He contributed to the band’s groundbreaking first two albums, Down by the Jetty (1974) and Malpractice (1975), which paved the way for subsequent generations of British punk and post-punk musicians like the Sex Pistols, the Jam, Gang of Four, and countless others.
The American band Blondie, the Ramones, and Richard Hell’s Voidoids—all of which have credited Dr. Feelgood as an influence on them—are good examples of Johnson’s legacy in the States. After leaving the band at the turn of the decade, Johnson went on to create the Wilko Johnson Band, which he led until his untimely passing.
Production from the band was inconsistent, but after appearing in Julian Temple‘s Oil City Confidential documentary about Dr. Feelgood in 2009, Johnson’s legacy received more continuous appreciation. In the first two seasons of “Game of Thrones,” Johnson played the role of Ser Ilyn Payne, the show’s executioner.
Johnson, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, opted to go on a farewell tour instead of undergoing chemotherapy. But cancer turned out to be less aggressive than expected, and in 2014 he announced that he was cancer-free. In 2018, Wilko Johnson and the Wilko Johnson Band released their final album, Blow Your Mind, and played shows up until the months before his death. Several musicians, including those Led Zeppelin, Franz Ferdinand, and the Sleaford Mods, paid tribute to Johnson.
Who Was Wilko Johnson?
English guitarist, singer, composer, and occasional actor Wilko Johnson (born John Peter Wilkinson on 12 July 1947 and passed away on 21 November 2022). In the 1970s, he was a member of the pub rock/rhythm and blues band Dr. Feelgood. Johnson’s signature guitar approach was attained by fingerstyle playing rather than the use of a guitar pick. A highly percussive guitar sound was the result of his ability to play rhythm guitar and riffs or solos simultaneously.
The English punk scene owed a debt to Johnson and Dr. Feelgood. This is what Paul Weller had to say about Johnson: “Wilko is a great guitarist, and while he may not be as well-known as some others, he is certainly in their company. And there are many others who would agree with you. Wilko is everywhere, or so it seems to me. The legacy left behind is impressive.”
He played the silent executioner Ser Ilyn Payne on the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones in 2011 and 2012. Johnson, who was born in Canvey Island, Essex, attended Westcliff High School for Boys and participated in a number of local bands before enrolling at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne to earn a bachelor’s degree in English literature. The ancient Icelandic sagas and Anglo-Saxon literature were required reading in his undergraduate degree.
When he finished school, he took an overland trip to India, and then he came back to Essex to join the Pigboy Charlie Band. Dr. Feelgood, a staple of the pub rock scene in the ’70s, is the band’s developed form. Upon his return from Goa in 1972, Johnson spent a little over a year in that role.
In 1965, Johnson paid £90 (about $1,854 in 2019) for his first Fender Telecaster at a store in Southend, Essex. He had a 1962 Fender Telecaster with a rosewood fingerboard that he had purchased in 1974, not long after Dr. Feelgood had signed their first record deal. Johnson had the guitar refurbished from its original sunburst body and white pickguard to black with a red pickguard.
