William Smith Jr., Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell’s grandfather, died in a crash between a car and a pedestrian on Friday night in Nashville. He was 76 years old.
The preliminary investigation by the police showed that Smith was crossing the street from north to south when a Holiday Inn Ford Transit passenger van hit him. The van was going west on West End Avenue in Nashville.
Smith was walking with his family, and one of them tried to warn him about the car coming up behind them. A document given to the media said that Smith probably did not hear his family’s warning.
At 10:18 p.m., police from the Mid-Town Hills Precinct went to the accident scene. Smith was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where his death was confirmed. Smith was in Nashville on Saturday to watch Campbell play in the bowl game between the Hawkeyes and the Kentucky Wildcats.

Kirk Ferentz, the head football coach at Iowa, said in a prepared statement, “Our hearts are with Jack and his whole family as they mourn the tragic death of their grandfather and father, William Smith Jr.” “We know that Mr. Smith had a big impact on his grandson and was a loyal Hawkeyes fan. We, players, coaches, and staff, will be thinking of and praying for the Campbell family during this tough time.”
In a news release, Iowa Athletics said that Campbell’s parents didn’t tell him about his grandfather’s death until after the Music City Bowl. Campbell’s parents made that choice so he could enjoy his last game as a Hawkeye.
Campbell did a lot to help Iowa beat Kentucky 21-0 at Nissan Stadium on Saturday. He had 10 tackles and 1 sack.
Smith was Jack’s stepmother, Jen Campbell’s father. He lived in Waterloo, Iowa.
