Even though critics had mixed feelings about Winning Time and some of the real people in the show didn’t like what they saw, it has become a commercial hit for HBO’s streaming service. And it’s not hard to see why, since sports dramas and retellings of famous sports teams from the past can often draw large, passionate crowds. Even if you don’t care much about sports, stories about people who have to work hard to get to the top are interesting and make you feel for them.
Since Winning Time’s first season ended on May 8, 2022, many people are curious about (and very excited for) what comes next. HBO has already said that they are working on a second season, so fans can look forward to it in the years to come. Let’s look at what we know and what we think we know about season 2 of Winning Time so far.

Winning Time Season 2 Release Date
Winning Time season 2 shouldn’t premiere until 2023 or 2024, at the earliest. This might apply to any specific changes as well. The writers and filmmakers of Winning Time for HBO may opt to share nuggets of information, but trailers and release dates are probably still in the future. If nothing else, this time around’s filming and production should be more efficient than in the past.
When series co-creator Jim Hecht initially suggested adapting Pearlman’s book to the author in 2014, the idea for Winning Time as a show began to take shape. After that, the premise for the programme was discussed for a long, but it wasn’t until 2019 that HBO formally authorised a pilot for the series, leading to the hiring of Max Borenstein (Instagram). Up to the pilot’s release in March 2022, casting, filming, and production were all in high gear.
We can predict that HBO is all in for this second season and most likely wants its return to their streaming platform as soon as possible now that the initial stress of having the show greenlit is over. We may assume that HBO is taking the possibilities for this series seriously given that Winning Time has also been a commercial hit and was confirmed for a second season midway through season one.
What is the Plot of Winning Time Season 2?

Season 1 will end on May 8, 2022. It will be about the time when Johnson and Abdul-Jabbar played for the Lakers. Even though the show was picked up for a second season, the creative team hasn’t said what it will be about. It’s likely that it will pick up where the first season left off in telling the story of the franchise. In the news about the renewal, Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO Programming, said:
“It’s been a thrill to bring Winning Time to life with Adam McKay, Max Borenstein, our phenomenal producing team, and this incredible cast. This series not only tells the riveting story of the Lakers’ rise, but is also a look back at a transformative era in basketball, celebrity, and the city of Los Angeles. We can’t wait to see how this team will tell the next chapter of this dynasty.”
Winning Time Season 2 Cast
The first season alone features a sizable cast of primary and recurring characters, all of whom it is reasonable to believe will return for a second season. The return of well-known actors, such as Quincy Isaiah as Magic Johnson, Solomon Hughes as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and John C. Reilly as Jerry Buss, is eagerly anticipated by fans. For the aforementioned renowned rivalry, we also hope to see more of Sean Patrick Small in his role as Larry Bird.
