With 2.5 seconds left, Nicholas Boyd made the game-winning basket to advance No. 9 Florida Atlantic over No. 8 Memphis to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Throughout the history of the competition, it was FAU’s first victory.

With fewer than 30 seconds left, Memphis led 65-64, and after FAU missed a basket, they had the opportunity to use the remaining time to their advantage by forcing the Owls to foul.

Sadly, they gave the ball away, and Boyd scored the winning basket with FAU in control after a tie-up.

Yet, there was some controversy about a such alliance. Before FAU immediately turned the ball over again, it appeared that Memphis might have reclaimed possession to call a timeout, but the officials did not make the call.

Instead of giving the Tigers the opportunity to draw a foul and drive to the foul line, the ball gave FAU the opportunity to make the game-winning basket, which they accomplished.

As Memphis ran out of timeouts, they attempted a long three-point shot, but they couldn’t get the ball off in time, and it was blocked. Boyd only made three of ten shots from the field, but the last one was crucial.

Giancarlo Rosado’s 15 points off the bench led the Owls, who had four players with double-digit points. FAU felt confident that they could cruise as their biggest advantage of the game reached 10 points. The highest margin Memphis had was seven.

With their 63-58 victory against top-seed Purdue, the Knights made tournament history by becoming the second 16-seed to upset a No. 1 seed. FAU will now take on No. 16 Fairleigh Dickinson.
