TV personality Jonnie Irwin’s startling cancer diagnosis may leave him with insufficient time to spend with his young children.
The 48-year-old father of three, who hosts the BBC’s Escape To The Country and Channel 4’s A Place In The Sun, disclosed in this week’s issue of Hello magazine that lung cancer has sadly gone to his brain. He said, “I don’t know how long I have left.”
Irwin said that his vision blurred while filming A Place in the Sun in August 2020 in Italy, which was the first indication of his disease. Doctors discovered his deadly illness at home. Chemotherapy and cancer medications have extended his life.
The TV host claimed he decided to withhold his sickness from his oldest child because he did not want to “shatter his innocence.” The TV presenter and his wife, Jessica, have a son Rex, 3, and twins Rafa and Cormac, two years old.
Irwin remarked, “He doesn’t need to know yet,” adding, “We make fun of my hair – he calls it my “spiky head” – but as far as he is convinced, his dad is normal, and why would I shatter his innocence?”

Irwin admitted that his cancer would eventually “catch up” with him, but he is doing all in his power to “hold off that day for as long as possible” by teaching Rex to ride a bicycle and engaging in other activities with him, like playing football and going to the beach.
The broadcaster, born in Leicestershire, is assisted by his 40-year-old wife Jessica. “I was given six months to live within a week of flying back from filming,” he recalled. I had to return home and let my wife, taking care of our children, know she was on her own. That was terrible. I was only able to apologise to her. I felt so obligated.
The couple relocated from Hertfordshire to Newcastle in 2020, where they now reside with their three children. Jonnie claimed that up until now, he had decided to keep his sickness a secret.
