Lakshmi married Salman Rushdie, an author she had been seeing for three years, in 2004; they later divorced the following year. She dated the multibillionaire businessman Theodore J. Forstmann from 2009 till 2011. Lakshmi has a daughter, Krishna, with her partner, the venture capitalist Adam Dell.
Lakshmi, who was 36 when she was diagnosed with endometriosis, is a cofounder of the Endometriosis Foundation of America, a charity that works to raise awareness and promote research and legislation concerning the condition. Padma Lakshmi was nurtured in a traditional Tamil Brahmin household after her 1970 birth in Madras, Tamil Nadu, India. She was just two years old when her parents split up. As a young girl, Lakshmi was sexually raped by her stepfather, a story that she has detailed in writing. She was hospitalised for three weeks in 1984 after being diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a severe skin response. Two days after being released from the hospital, she was in a car accident in Malibu, severely injuring her right hip and upper right arm.
