Please return for an updated story. Dean Young, a former Texas poet laureate, held the William Livingston Chair of Poetry at the University of Texas and was a well-known educator. He died at the age of 67.
After a brief COVID sickness, Young passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, from natural causes. Young was a modern American poet who came from the same poetic family as Kenneth Koch, Frank O’Hara, and John Ashbery.

Young, who is frequently referred to as a second-generation New York School poet, also found inspiration and influence in the works of French Surrealist poets like André Breton, Paul Éluard, and others.
His MFA was awarded by Indiana University. Young was appointed to the William Livingston Chair of Poetry at the University of Texas in Austin’s Michener Center for Writers in 2008.
His most recent publications include The Art of Recklessness, Fall Higher, and Bender: New and Selected Poems. For her poem “Strike Anywhere,” Young won the Colorado Prize for Poetry.
She also received a Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 2002, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
Since 1993, several of his works have appeared in The Best American Poetry anthology. In 2014, he served as the Texas Poet Laureate.
