Andy Smart, a comedian, and member of The Comedy Store, passed away at 63. Grace, Smart’s daughter, broke the sad news of his passing: I regret to inform you that Dad d!ed suddenly last night.
“He had so many friends and such a great life. Raise a glass for him.”
Smart began performing with The Comedy Store Players as a visitor and a permanent member in 1995. Smart has previously commented, “I was lucky because there were quite a few people they could have chosen.” while referring to his induction into the Players as a full member in 1996.
Before Smart joined the Players, he and Angelo Abela performed as a duo known as the Vicious Boys. The pair was honored with Time Out magazine’s Street Entertainer Award in 1984.

After the victory, they went on to appear on Wake Up London and Channel 4’s The Tube, the latter of which is remembered for an iconic moment in which Smart, disguised as a hotel bellboy and acting like a great dane, licked the face of presenter Paula Yates.
After three years, the twosome returned to Channel 4 to host an American football show. Eddie Izzard, another comedian, remembered Smart as a “very funny man and a great improviser” and led the flood of tributes.
“His talent will be missed,” Izzard wrote on Twitter.
“Loved all the time I spent with him at comedy festivals over the years,” said comedian Kevin Bridges. Keeping you all in my thoughts, Grace.
Dara Briain, an Irish presenter, and comedian, described Smart as “a force for joy” and said that the world “will sorely miss” him. Comedian Milton Jones expressed his dismay at the news. Few people, it seems, can find the same happiness in front of and behind the camera as he did. I’ll never forget his infectious grin.
Actor and comedian Rufus Hound was “absolutely heartbroken” by the news, writing: “There will be others that will speak of his talent, but simply one of the great MEN died. A lust for revelry in all forms, there’s less light today. I will be drinking to him tonight. What a lad.”
