The Miami Heat said Saturday that guard Caleb Martin was sick and unable to participate in practice. As if missing Martin wasn’t enough, Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra hasn’t ruled out Tyler Herro (still recovering from a fractured right hand) for Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the Denver Nuggets. Spoelstra, however, was reluctant to set a deadline for the guard’s comeback.

Herro, who has been sidelined since fracturing his hand in Game 1 of the Heat’s first-round series against the Milwaukee Bucks, has increased the intensity of his exercises over the past week in preparation for his return.

“The status has not changed yet,” Spoelstra said before the Heat’s practice. I don’t mean to be vague, however… The only thing we’re concerned with at the moment is his procedure, so he can keep working and getting ready. I’ll let you know when that moment comes, when he’s ready to leave.

Spoelstra stuck to his original position when asked whether or not Herro would be available for Sunday’s game. Spoelstra has stated, “We’re doing this game by game.” On Sunday, I’ll let you know. The situation is still the same. There’s a lot to take from it.

The Heat are confident despite losing Game 1 to the Nuggets and are waiting to see how Martin is doing and how Herro’s hand responds to more rehab work. The Heat went into Saturday’s practice relaxed and assured.

I don’t believe too much has to be said,” Heat player Jimmy Butler said. I don’t think so. The score must be tied, or you will lose. It’s always ongoing. No one should ever be written off. You must reach the number four. At the count of four, it’s a done deal.

We may be 1, but we know we can make it to 4 even though we’re down. We’re in there giggling and grinning, aware that our performance could improve. We promise to up our game. If we want to win, we need to improve. Few words are exchanged. It’s all about the plans we make.
