Charles Johnson Cause of Death: The state medical examiner for North Carolina has concluded that former NFL wide receiver Charles Johnson’s death was a suicide.
According to the article, that USA Today got, the 50-year-old former athlete passed away in July after overdosing on drugs.
He exhibited “acute oxycodone, hydrocodone, and mirtazapine poisoning,” according to the report. According to the outlet, he had no known medical issues or open prescriptions.
On the afternoon of July 17, Johnson’s body was discovered during a welfare check at a Hampton Inn, which was roughly 6.5 miles from his house. The day prior, his wife had filed a missing person’s report.
According to the report, “he had been acting strangely for the previous week and had just bought a burial and cremation service.”

According to the report, there were “two empty bottles of water, an empty travel-sized bottle of body lotion, an empty travel container, a pair of sandals, and a pair of eyeglasses” among other things that were discovered in the room. Johnson checked into the hotel, but it appears that he went home instead, leaving behind his phone, wallet, and car keys.
Before playing nine seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, and Buffalo Bills, Johnson was a star wide receiver at the University of Colorado.
He was a coach and staff member at Heritage High School in Wake Forest at the time of his passing, and according to USA Today, his coworkers regarded him as “cheerful and giving.”
