Gay was born in the United States of America to Haitian parents who had immigrated to the United States. When they were both attending New York University, her parents met for the first time (her mother studying nursing and her father in engineering.) Roxane Gay, who writes under her name, is Gay’s cousin.

The majority of Gay’s upbringing was split between New York City and Saudi Arabia due to her father’s service in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Occupation of her mother was that of a nurse. Gay received his economics education at Phillips Exeter Academy and then continued his education at Stanford University. She was given the Anna Laura Myers Prize for writing the best undergraduate economics thesis while attending Stanford University.

1992 was the year when she completed all the requirements to graduate from high school. After that, Gay went on to get a doctorate in political science at Harvard. She was also honored with the Toppan Prize, which is given annually to students with the best political science dissertation.

Later, in July 2015, she was offered a position at Harvard University, where she currently resides, as the Dean of Social Science. She was given the position of Edgerley Family Dean of the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences in July 2018, and the 15th of August will mark the beginning of her tenure in that role.

Gay’s work delves into various facets of political life in the United States, such as racial politics, identity politics, and voter involvement. She currently holds the position of vice president for the Midwest Political Science Association.

Roland Fryer, an economics professor, was placed on administrative leave during the 2018-2019 academic year after credible allegations of sexual misconduct were found to exist between Fryer and at least four members of his staff, including one of his assistants, by a review panel that Gay convened. In addition to this, Gay has served as a trustee for Phillips Exeter Academy since the year 2017.
