(AP) TEMPE, Arizona – Conrad Dobler, a standout offensive lineman in the NFL during the 1970s, has passed away. He was 72. Dobler passed away on Monday in Pueblo, Colorado, according to the Arizona Cardinals. The reason for death was not disclosed.

Dobler was a left guard on a St. Louis club known as the “Cardiac Cardinals” that featured Hall of Famer Dan Dierdorf on the offensive line.

After 10 years of eye gouging, leg whipping, and finger biting in the NFL’s trenches throughout the 1970s, Dobler was also known for his nasty play, and he even gave his book the title “They Call Me Dirty.” In a 1987 Miller Lite commercial, Dobler adopted his troublemaking persona by encouraging the audience to fight the beer’s tagline, “Tastes great/Less filling.”

Conrad Dobler’s friends, family, and former teammates are in our thoughts and prayers, Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill stated in a statement. He was the kind of rugged, physical, and fierce guy that you would rather line up with as a teammate than as a rival.

Conrad played a significant role in the 1970s Cardiac Cards’ on-field triumph. Away from it, he was a genuine source of joy and compassion for everyone who had the honor of calling him a friend, and that is what I will cherish the most.

While playing for Hall of Fame coach Don Coryell from 1975 to 1977, Dobler won three consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl. By surrendering eight sacks, the 1975 offensive broke the NFL record that stood at the time.

From 1972 through 1977, he was a member of the Cardinals. After that, he spent two seasons each with New Orleans and Buffalo. Dobler was selected in the fifth round of the 1972 NFL draft out of Wyoming. Six of his children and 12 of his grandchildren are still alive.
