Didi Conn, who played Sandy in “Grease,” claims that she spoke to Olivia Newton-John for the last time “only a few weeks” prior to her passing.
The co-stars stayed friends over the years, and the actress who portrayed “Beauty School Dropout” Frenchy in the well-known musical frequently maintained in touch.
We talked about once a month or so, Conn, 71, recently said in an exclusive interview with Page Six.
“When we last spoke, she was in the hospital. She didn’t even realize that she had fractured a leg. Her bones were literally breaking.
The “Physical” singer berated her friend when she learned Conn had cancer in addition to her own.
“She exclaimed, “What! How come you didn’t inform me?’ Conn recalled. “Then the following day, I received this lovely orchid plant. Then three days prior to her passing, one of the orchid flowers dropped to the ground, stopping my heart.
As was previously mentioned, 73-year-old Elizabeth Newton-John lost her fight with breast cancer in August 2022 after being a vocal supporter of cancer research.b 1992 was her initial cancer diagnosis; subsequent ones came in 2013 and 2017. She remembered Chloe, her daughter, as being very young. Her priorities about fame and all that has now changed to include living, being the best mother, and being the best friend. Additionally, she said, flourishing means surviving and achieving great success. And aside from performing, she truly committed her life to that.
She laughed and added that Newton-John usually sang “I Love You, I Honestly Love You” for the encore. “Oh my gosh, the place would go beserk,” she remarked.
And after she had finished dancing with all her heart, I would watch her from the wings near the stage, she said. Because of the spread of her disease to her sacrum and back, she was unable to dance until the end, yet she continued to give the audience her all.
“And then she would say, ‘I honestly love you,’ and extend her hands to the audience in such a loving, sincere way,” Conn added. She and they truly loved each other.
The former “Benson” star also said to Page Six that she had no idea “Grease” would end up being such a revered classic while it was being filmed.
