Early Life of Doris Day
On April 3, 1922, Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was of German and Irish origin and her parents were Catholic. Her mother Alma Schrader aspired to be an opera singer, while her father William Kappelhoff was a music educator and choirmaster.
The lone child, she was. Early on, Day started taking dancing lessons, and by the time she was nine, she had made appearances in regional theatrical performances. She tried out for a part in the 1939 movie Romance on the High Seas but was not chosen. But Day’s singing of “It’s Magic,” one of the movie’s musical pieces, became a popular song.
Day performed in large bands with Les Brown and His Band of Renown in the early 1940s. She collaborated with the band on a number of tracks, including “Sentimental Journey,” which sold one million copies. She wed trombonist Al Jorden in 1945, but the union disintegrated after only six months.
Day relocated to Hollywood following her divorce and started acting in motion pictures. Romance on the High Seas (1948) featured her in her debut movie role. She continued to act in musical movies like April in Paris (1952), April is Yours (1949), Tea for Two (1950), Calamity Jane (1953), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), Please Don’t Eat the Daisies (1960), and Lover Come Back (1961).
Day established the Doris Day Animal League in 1968; it later changed its name to the Humane Society of the United States. She was a vocal advocate for animal rights and acted as the group’s spokeswoman.
In the years that followed, Day continued to make sporadic appearances on cinema and television. Six You Get Eggroll (1968) was the last movie in which she appeared. She starred in The Doris Day Show, her own television sitcom, in 1973. High ratings were achieved during the five seasons of the show.
Day left the entertainment industry in 1989. President George W. Bush presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004. She passed away on May 13, 2019, at the age of 97, in her California home in Carmel Valley.
