The horrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch, a rising star in the Texas medical field who was also youthful and personable, served as the inspiration for a popular podcast that was based on the same name. When patients entering Dr. Duntsch’s operating room for sophisticated but routine spine surgeries start left permanently crippled or dead, everything changes quickly.
Before, Dr. Duntsch had built thriving neurosurgery practice, but now everything is different. As the number of his victims continues to rise, Michelle Shughart, along with two other physicians and a prosecutor from Dallas, decide to take action.

Dr. Death Season 2 Storyline
On July 25, 2015, Dr. Christopher Duntsch operated on a 65-year-old teacher, Madeline Beyer (Maryann Plunkett). For years, she’d been plagued with back agony that would radiate all the way down to the tip of her foot. Madeline’s pain management team suggested meeting Dr. Duntsch for Spinal fusion surgery.
After the procedure, she had severe discomfort. Dr. Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) underwent revision surgery three days later. According to his findings, Duntsch performed the fusion in such a way that it pressed against a nerve root, resulting in Madeline’s discomfort and anguish. However, post-surgery, her pain ceased a little, but she couldn’t move her left foot. Duntsch’s negligence disabled Madeline for life.
Dr. Henderson later questions a fellow doctor, Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), whether Duntsch’s sloppiness is an error or he did it purposely. Further investigation reveals Duntsch to be a butcher. A dangerous monster is accountable for the deaths and disability of practically all his patients. Dr. Henderson concludes that Duntsch must be stopped at any cost.
Why Did Christopher Duntsch Botch His Patients?
Dr. Death didn’t precisely demonstrate Duntsch’s motive for the horrific mess, but it did point forth his malignant narcissism. While Kayla, Duntsch’s undergraduate sweetheart, described him as a brilliant researcher, she also claimed that he lacked surgical talent. Doctor Geoffrey Skadden, head of the fellowship at Tennessee Medical School under Duntsch, was enticed by his start-up (Discgenics) for innovative spine surgery and became an investor for monetary rewards.
Under Skadden’s supervision, Duntsch participated in less than 100 surgeries (typically, neurosurgeons participate in around 1,000 surgeries during their residency) (generally, neurosurgeons participate in over 1,000 surgeries during their residency). So Christopher Duntsch lacked the necessary education and experience to perform his job duties. Yet, Skadden issued him a letter of recommendation trusting his research skills and his Discgenics.
After a botched surgery, most doctors are filled with regret. Dr. Henderson described his own experience with Woodland Arp, who died following a revision fusion surgery. This remorse will never leave Henderson’s mind. But in Duntsch’s instance, even after killing two patients, he never felt repentance.
Instead, he blamed his staff, hospital, and other individuals for his disaster. Narcissism and neurological disorders were evident in his behavior. In simple words, Duntsch had God Complex and lacked feelings. Thus, even after slaying his patients, he never accepted his inaccuracy as a surgeon. Even in his dying moments, he maintained an arrogant attachment to his cherished past.
Before the sentence was handed down, Chris made one more attempt to persuade his father Don that if he could save his life, he would give up surgery and devote his time to research. Don described an anecdote from Chris’ youth that underscored his obsessive behaviour. If Chris was released, his father implied, he would continue operating on and murdering patients somewhere else in the world if he were to do so. For this reason, the prison was the greatest place to keep the creature under control.
‘Dr. Death’ Season 1 Ending Explained
Assistant DA Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb) built a case against Christopher Duntsch. She brought a lawsuit against him for injuring an elderly woman named Madeline Beyer (65). In such claims, there was no limit to the extent of the complaint, and thus she presented all the victims of Duntsch’s wrath. Michelle intended to prove Duntsch’s intent to cause injury and appealed for a life sentence in jail. It was all Dr. Kirby and Dr. Henderson were searching to stop Duntsch from performing procedures.
All of Christopher Duntsch’s patients and close family members testified against him in court. Dr. Henderson was upfront about how Duntsch had violated the Hippocratic Oath’s principles. Because of his haughty demeanor, he showed no regard for his colleagues in medicine and refused to accept their assistance in caring for his patients. He misconducted 33 procedures and nevertheless permitted himself to enter the operating room, which proved he had no sympathies for mankind.
On February 20, 2017, Christopher Duntsch was found guilty and handed a life sentence. Dr. Kirby and Dr. Henderson maintain their practices actively, pushing for patient care and safety. The Texas Department of State Health Services overturned the proposed penalties on Baylor Regional Medical Center, where Duntsch performed his big procedures. Glaring evidence of a crooked and defective medical system. Medical errors are the third greatest cause of death in the United States, behind only cancer and heart disease.
