Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is a 2022 fantasy film directed by David Yates from a screenplay by J. K. Rowling and Steve Kloves. It is the sequel to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), the third installment in the Fantastic Beasts film series, and the eleventh overall in the Wizarding World franchise.
Its ensemble cast includes Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Callum Turner, Jessica Williams, Katherine Waterston, and Mads Mikkelsen. Set some years after the events of its predecessor, the film sees Albus Dumbledore tasking Newt Scamander and his allies with a quest that takes them into the heart of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald’s army.
Always meant to be “at least” a trilogy, the third Fantastic Beasts picture was slated for release in November 2020. It was later pushed back to a July 2022 release, and much of the major cast from the first two films confirmed their commitment in March 2020.
Principal photography was intended to begin in early 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually commencing in September 2020. Johnny Depp, who portrayed Grindelwald in previous films, initially was supposed to return and filmed one scene for the film, but in November 2020 quit following recent unfavorable news; Mikkelsen replaced him later that month. Filming took place till February 2021.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore Storyline
In Kweilin, China in 1932, Newt Scamander assists a Qilin, a supernatural creature that can see into one’s soul as well as the future, giving birth. Gellert Grindelwald’s acolytes, led by Credence Barebone, attack and kill the mother, and abduct the child. Grindelwald subsequently kills the creature to utilize its talent of precognition. Unbeknownst to them, however, the Qilin has had twins, the younger of which Newt is able to save.
Unable to combat Grindelwald owing to a blood bond, Albus Dumbledore recruits Newt, his brother Theseus, American witch Eulalie “Lally” Hicks, Senegalese-French wizard Yusuf Kama, and American No-Maj Jacob Kowalski to prevent Grindelwald’s scheme for world dominance. Yusuf Kama is planted as a spy in Grindelwald’s inner circle while the rest of the party is transferred to Berlin, Germany. There, the gang witnessed Grindelwald being exonerated of all criminal charges by the International Confederation of Wizards (ICW) and afterward vying for the office of Supreme Mugwump.
Grindelwald’s acolytes, who have undermined the German Ministry of Magic, arrest Theseus and plan to assassinate one of Grindelwald’s challengers, the Brazilian contender, Vicência Santos. Dumbledore assigns Newt and Lally their new assignments: to rescue Theseus and halt the assassination.
While Newt rescues his brother from the secret German wizarding prison, Lally and Jacob thwart the assassination attempt; however, Jacob is subsequently framed for attempting to kill Grindelwald and he and Lally barely escape, giving Grindelwald an incentive to turn the Wizarding world against the Muggle world. Meanwhile, Grindelwald has sent Credence to assassinate Dumbledore. Dumbledore soon beats Credence and he is revealed to be the illegitimate son of Dumbledore’s brother, Aberforth.
The leaders of the wizarding world convene in Bhutan, where the new Supreme Mugwump is to be elected by the old tradition of being judged worthy by a Qilin, who bows to those pure of heart. Using necromancy to resuscitate the Qilin he killed earlier, Grindelwald has it bow to him during the Walk of the Qilin ceremony, effectively rigging the election. He instantly declares war on all Muggles and tortures Jacob for trying to assassinate him.
However, Credence, Queenie Goldstein, and Newt expose him. The surviving Qilin is formed, who subsequently bows to Dumbledore, and later Santos. Enraged, Grindelwald tries to assassinate Credence but is shielded by Albus and Aberforth. The resulting contact of the two spells destroys the blood pact that prohibited Dumbledore and Grindelwald from fighting one other, beginning a conflict between the two. Fighting to a stalemate, Grindelwald eventually retreats.
In the aftermath, a dying Credence is accepted by Aberforth and returned home. Jacob and Queenie married in the former’s bakery in New York City, with most of the gang and Tina Goldstein in attendance. Dumbledore watches the ceremony from afar and thereafter briefly thanks Newt before departing alone into the night.
